Once. Head of Railroads
Mr. Hill, who was at one time
president of twelve of the import
ant railroads of this country, has
long been deeply interested In the
cause of peace. During the war
he was active In all that tended
toward nn early settlement, and
was of great assistance to Belgium,
K ranee and Kngland and to Japan
of which he has been special ad
ieor to the government for twenty
years. During 1922 ho arranged
! the celebrntloin whereby this coun
try nnd Canada commemorated
one hundred years of peace. As
tho everlasting symbol of this
peace Mr. Hill created the peace
portal on the border between
R:ltish Columbia and tho state of
Washington. This groat monu
ment, which cost him more than
$.100,000 was dedicated in tho
nresenco of President Harding nnd
tho Canadian governor-general by
Mnmhnll .Toffre whom Mr. Hill
brought to this country and later
took around tho world in the inter
ests of peace. Tho peace portal
was considered of such import
nnm that for tho first time In hts

tho congress of the United States
paused resolutions of thanks to Mr.

ROME "Seat guardoro," some
thing like tho "lounge lizards," of
America, havo originated here as
a result of the growing predilec
tion for afternoon tea in the Eng
lish fashion, .
Rome's number of tea rooms In
restricted, so each afternoon young
men averse to strenuous work take
seats and hold them until the tea
seekers arrive. Then, instead of
relinquishing the ohalrn, the
iguarders merely offer to make
room for the arrivals, slipping
back as soon as .tea is over. .. .
To date, the new occupation
merely is used as a means for so
cial advancement, but there are
indications of commercialization.
