on the recent reorganisation of the
treasury's enforcement staff. She

effort to expedite action in pro

The anti-trust section of the de
partment, under William J. Dono
van, assistant to the attorney gen
eral, reported that during the fis
cal year ending last June 15 anti
trust cases were disposed of, and
16 instituted. Of tho 13 that
passed into history. 11 wero
dropped or resulted In decisions
adverse to the government, three
were settled by consent decrees,
and in one tho courts denied a mo
tion to dismiss and entered a final
decree. Out of 8577 criminal cases
of six outstanding classifications,
brought to trial by the depart
ment's criminal section, also under
Mr. Donovan, there were 8254 con
victions and only 323 acquittals.
Federal prisoners at the end ot
last June numbered 8518 com
pared to 7667 a year previous. The
prison sec:lons pointed' out that
although 1 3-1 S of the 8518 held
last June had been transferred to
state and other non-federal insti
tutions, the federal penitentiaries
still were very badly overcrowded.
It was declared also that many
able-bodied prisoners remain idle
because of inadequate facilities for
industrial training In the federal
prisons.
