The salad Is ono of the most
healthful articled on our menu, if
children see their elders eat U, they
will like It as a matter of course,
unleKH ft is too sour. Throughout
the whole year, the salad should
appear dally on the table of the
well-fed family. It should be made
chiefly from fresh fruits and veget
ables. The yellow turnip and tho
carrot are neglected salad mater
ials which might be used more
largely with profit. Coarse vegot
ahles of this nature are more ac
ceptable In salads If they are
chopped.

Silk or Rayon Damask

One of the newest materials for
the development' of bathing ap

the Pry Goods Economist. This
fabric Is very decorative and is
used for both suits and beach

of their cut and styling to make
them distinctive.' Rubberized silks
are also being made Into suits, the

Fifth Avenue sponsors checks
for southern resort wear, and It is
also thought that there Is every
prospect for a favorite spring sea
son for checked fabrics, says the
Dry Goods Economist. Two-piece
frocks are shown In a fabric
checked In alternate squares of
red, blue and white. Checks fir a
also sponsored for coats, but very
often take on larger patterns for
coats of strictly sports type. Very
youthful two-piece frocks are fre
quently noted with pleated checked
woolen skirts accompanied by
blouses of plain wool or velvet.
CHILD'S ENVIRONMENT COUNTS
With the Growing Boys and Girls Heredity Is Fixed, But
the Environment Can Often Be Improved
The question, which Is the more
Important, heredity or environ
merit, has provoked endless dis
cussion, "J fe's Just like liia fa
ther, and you can't do a thing with
him" account to some people, fre
quently the mother's people, for all
the bad traitn a child may show.
Others aro sure that, no matter
what his parents may have been,
every child starts fresh and the
conditions which surround him
determine absolutely what ho will
be. K very one knows that child
ren from degraded homes who
have been adopted by well-to-do
families and have been given every
advantage have turned out, some
disgracefully and somo so as to
make worth while everything that
has been done for them. What
made tho difference In results?
Heredity? Perhaps, As the pro
verb has It, "You can't make a silk
purso out of a sow's ear." En
vironment? Perhaps, also, some
children who were surrounded hy
bad conditions during their enrly
years were already started In un
fortunate habits before they were
transplanted. Moreover, the .new
conditions, supposedly better, may
have been better in lodging, food
and clothing only. The child may
have been brought up. In fact, by
a feeble-minded nurse and the
friends she met in the park, or
may have led a lonely life starved
of affection and been seen by his
fostflr mother only when her social
engagements permitted her to play
with the child for a little while
as she might with a doll.
After all it is useless to attempt
to soltle whether heredity or en- ;
virnument is trio moro Important.
Every living being in affected by
both. The practical question is
what may be done to control both
so as to secure tho best results.
Whether we aro trying to produce
good corn, good pigs, or good peo
pie.
With growing boys and girls
heredity Is fixed, but the environment-can
often be improved, Tho
parents are the ones who control
the destiny of the child and make,
his environment to a large extent.
Their mental ability, their con- '
trol of. their emotions, their Inter- .
esls, particularly their Interest In;
the child, their ambitions or laek:
of them, their moral standards-
these nil determine what the child
shall make out of the endowment
that nature has. given him. Some
parents who read to their children
or tell them stories and answer '
their questions In an Interesting
and intelligent manner, though
they do not alter the children's
intellectual equipment, do furnish
a rich soil in which the children
may develop, and thus affect very
much the point which their de
velopment may reach. Parents
can even determine what kind of
atmosphere the child's mind shall
grow In one of discontent, wrangling,-
deceit, and hate, or one of
cheerfulness, sincerity, and love.
