Once each year nil America

watched over them and their
country. This day Js called
ThankatclvInK and comes this year
oo November 26. It in a day of
feast Ins, celebrating, thankfulness
and Joy to every one.
America has had a Croat deal to
be thankful for In the past year.
While Kurope was In a chaotic
state, our country was on a welt
regulated and peace! ul schedule.
We have had no wars or famines
to disturb us. It has been a year
ot prosperity and happiness.
It has been a successiul year.

students became accustomed to
the school routine - quickly and
with little difficulty. Interestins
projects are well under way which
will entertain every one later in
the year. All is running smoothly
for the University hiph school and
210 complaints have been heard.
So let us mako a really thank
ful Thanksgiving for every one
since as students and cituens we
have much in common for which
to be thankful. May we open our
eyes nnd see the many things that
are around us only for our good or
our pleasure.
Since the period of modern
times has been reached in United
States history Mr. Wooten's hts
'tory cjass has decided to sub
scribe to the "Literary Digest."
Every Friday the class period will
be turned over to such discussion.
Students of the, eight o'clock
biology class conducted by E. R.
Means, migrated to Deady hall
Monday morning. The purpose of
the trip was to see the stuffed
birds which are housed In glass
cases. However, the pupils found
many other interesting things at
the building, and hope that they
may go there again.

Volley ball was started in the
eleventh and twelfth grade gym
classes under the supervision of
. Miss Darvault. Monday, the main
rules of the game were outlined
and the girls practiced "the
serve.'

are the topic of the
day in the eight o'clock general
science class under the supervision
of Ivewls H. Carlson. The stu
dents are -requested to read
seventy-five pages a week on their
chosen problems. Every day tney
are quized over the material which
tney have studied, involution,
classification of plants and ani
mals, chemistry, levers and pullies,
astronomy, and the study of
protozoas are the projects being
worked on at present.
The "Blue Bonnet" Girl Scout
troup of the University high
school held a candy sale in the
hail veunesaay at ten ana twelve
o'clock.
The money they made on these
sales will be used to entertain the
other troups In the city at Christ
mas.
In assembly November 20, four
boys were nominated for yell
leader. Uson Jewett "was nom
inated by the student council;
Austin Frey, Xorval Libby, and
Lloyd Gordinlcr were nominated
by the students. Elections will be
held as soon as the candidates
have tried out.
Mrs. Edna " Assenhelmer, her
son. Dean Condon. Austin - Frey.
and Mira Florotte Janelln, teacher
of the two o'clock study-hall, spent
their Thanksgiving vacation at
Gardiner. Oflng to the condition
of the roads they had to board the
train at Marshfleld Instead of
completing the Journey In their
automobile.

act play to be given later in the

jects ruled 'Supremo, in the as
sembly room at one 0 olock Tues
day. This was the first court of
his Royal Highness that has been
here this year. The biggest ques
tion that arose- during the session,
was that of slavery. While many
tears coursed down his blackened
cheek, a golden haired, curley
headed, half-educated' slave told
how he had been separated from
his loved ones.
Mr. Webster and Mr. Hayne
gave a stirring debate on slavery.
Uncle Tom then entered In a wheel
chair and recited instances when
he hud seen slaves whipped and
beaten like curs!
A very 111 tempered law entered
under the .name of Mr. Fugitive
slave law, but was Immediately
amputated by tho snrgennt-at
nrms while the compromise of
1820 and 1860 was allowed to re
main. Calhoun and Jefferson
both aired their opinions on
slavery at the request of Prince
Cotton Uln.
John Brown told of his attack
on tho arsenal at Harper's Ferry.
The king ordered him hung on a

The boys physics class of Uni
versity high school have decided
to build models of dirigibles, air
planes, submarines etc. The de
cision came after a week of studj
of uir pressure at different ultl
tudos, and beneath the surface ot
water. Specific gravity tests have
also been studied.
So eager was the individual to
become educated that he persist
ently came promptly to school
every morning and entered each
class as though searching for the
most desirable one. His choice
never centered on any one class
but seemed to vary on each oc
casion. But as University high school
has a watting list, and Spot's uame
was not nt the top, he was re
peatedly put out of the building,
amid many cries and waitings.
The sixth annual high school
conference which is always held j
in Kugene. is to convene on the
campus December Srd and 4th of
this year. This conference is a
meeting of delegates from all the
high schools of Orepoh to talk
about what they are doing In thoir
school and to better conditions
where It Is possible.

A net profit of $5.S0 was made
by the five girls of the junior
class who sold candy at the public
market last Saturday. The girls.

Juanlta Kilborn, rented a booth
and took their candy there early
In the morning. All of the candy
was sold by noon, and the girls
went home satisfied with the re
sults of the sale.
Each Saturday until after Christ
mas sales of different kinds will
be civen bv crouns from the junior
class. This money is being earned
to pay for settinirs and lighting ef
fects for "the junior scrap bag."
The basket ball squad has been
practicing hard lately, getting
ready for the new coach, who will
take charge next Tuesday. No
games have been scheduled yet
but negotiations are under way
with Springfield and Albany.
K. U. Moore and H. it. uougiass
have decided that one half of a
credit will be given to each mem
ber of the Dramatic club at the
end of the year, provided that they
have attended the meetings, lec
tures, and rehearsals regularly,
and are able to pass an examina
tion at the end of the year.
This should prove an incentive
to the student to do better work
In the. Dramatic club and to really
try to get something from it.

Oregon's native birds, were shown
In both biology classes last Wed
nesday, by E. B. Means, head of
the science department. The
slides were taken and colored by
Mr. Bruce Horsefall, of Portland,
who is quite famous In this field
of work, and is quite well known
by Mr. Means.
The slides showed the more
common species of birds, their
homes, nests, and habits.
The seventh and eighth grades
are giving a bookshelf play, De
cember 3, and every one is to rep
resent a character in some book.

gene to this school -from which he
intends to graduate.
Plans for the Improvement of
stage facilities In the audi torium
are under way. Now and more
convenient exits are being planned
and tho stage Is to be deepened.
This will help the Dramatic
club la tho production of I'enrod
and other plays which nro to be
given.
The students In Mr. Wooten's
two o'clock United States history
class have been requested to sub
scribe to tho Literary Digest so
that they may ln used on Fridays
in place of tho regular history as
signments. By sending for these
magazines as a class rather than
having each studont make his own
subscription, these magazines can
be procured for six cents a copy
instead of ten cents, which Is the
regular selling prlco, or for one
dollar and a half from now until
the end of the school year. How
ever the students who aro taking
United States history this semester
and do not intend to take civics
next term can order eight maga
zines, for this term only, at the
same reduction as those who order
for next semester also.
More Interest must be shown In
the girl's basketball, or practice
will have to be discontinued as
enough players have not turned
out to make a team. Announce
ments have been made in each
class meeting, and ft is hoped the
girls will give heed to tho an
nouncements and give tho girls
support in their sport,
Three minute tests are being
given to the pupils of the first
year typing classes. To have one's
name on the honor roll one must
wrlto for three minutes with one
or no mistakes. Each student Is
