GOOD ADVICE IS OREGON
Slnca Waller M. Pierce became
golmrnor pt Oregon ha haa talked
not Infrequently ' knout thine of
which ho knows very little and the
result haa not been Impressive: but
day bcfoejeslcjaytt (he T-ane
county fair he talked about farm
ing, and when he does thai he is
on familiar ground and says some
thing worth listening to.
Governor Pieroe said In -effect
that the Oregon farmer should
grow fewer staples for export and
more special ties for 'home eon'
sumption. That is good logic
When the American farmer grows
staples, for export be Is competing
with cheap land-end cheap labor
throughout the world, and so la at
a great -disadvantage; ,but when
he grows specialties for home con
sumption he gets away from com
petition, or at the worst he la oom
petingwith:fellow Americans upon
an equal basis. , ". f ; " ' v
The beauty of this doctrine is
that the Oregon farmer baa t Ms
command so many specialties that
aro comparatively free from com
petition in the markets. Our cli
mate and soil give us tremendous
advantages in'; the production -of
these specialty crops, and the gov
ernor is right when he says we
should stick to then and let the
lens favored regions grow the
staples in competition with cheap
land and cheap-labor abroad.
