An appreciation of Ralph Waldo
Emerson, us a' man as well us mi
author, is what Charles J. wood
buiy, of Oakland, Culifornln, Clowe
friend of the author's anil of the
entire "Concord croup. ' uroUKht
to his hearers before (he-university
summer . session students and
townspeople yesterday. Mr, WooJ
bury's leoturo is rupleto with rem
inlscences of the great essayist
which bring his audience a picture
of a lovable, eccentric turn very
vitul personality.
yAnd yet." said Mr. Woodbury.
"I hesitate to use the word per
sonality in connection with Kmer-
son. There was nothing personal
ahout him. He hod an inner force
that was - stimulative, arousing,
germinal, creative. Ho was like no
other i Kmerson. Ills geneulogy
traced back to Gautama Buddha,
Confucius, Socrates and Benjamin
Franklin.
"Emerson Is to be rend ns the
scriptures, are to be read a sen
tence nt a' time. One arouses the
soul, the other the mind. His lit
erature abounds in challenges."
Audience Is Whle
In discussing Emerson's essnys,
and the way in which he went
about writing them, the' spenker
said that he had never ceased to
marvel at the fact that a man who
wrote On such abstract subjects as
'Compensation,' . "Self-Reliance,
"Love." . "Friendship" and "Char
acter," could still command such a
large audience. It was because the
author's sincerity and vitality were
so manifest in what ho wrote. Mr.
Woodbury said that he used to
think that Emerson spoke only to
a eelect group, but' since, he had
seen pocket-size Emerson's in the
hands of commuters in California,
seen volumes of his essays on bar
ber's shelves 'and met a-railroad
conductor's son who was named
for iiim, he had changed his mind.
Events Were Nothhur
"Events were nothing to Emer
son," said the speaker. "His
thoughts were his events. ' Mr.
Woodbury told of the entrances in
Emerson s diary for the most im
portant events of his life. They
were short, terse, concise. When
his home was destroyed by fire, he
wrote simply. "House burned."
For his meeting and his marriage
with his wife he had only two short
entries on different dates. "Two
lines for Lydla," remarked Mr.
Woodbury, with his quaint humor.
'Mr. Emerson believed that the
way your thought first comes to
you is the best," said the-speaker.
"He . believed- also- that ' the best
lines scan. He used to say, 'Note
the thoughts that come to you and
follow-them.: Beware of hinges to
connect your thoughts.' Insincerity
Is apt to creep In there He .did
not care if the thought he uttered
today agreed with one he had ut
tered a month before. If a sentence
in one of his essays could agree
with a preceding one. all right: If
Jiot, it would have to. look out for
Emerson's great message, said
the speaker, was that of sincerity.
Individuality. His plea was to have
everyone be himself at all times. .
