i - Dancing Attendance 5
When a person pays marked attendance-
to another he is said to
be "dancing attendance." Thl
phrase come from the Midle Ages.
It was a generally observed wed
ding custom then that the brlda
must dance with all who asked
her. In Chrlnten'g "State of Mat
rimony." a book published in 1643
la found this record:
"Then muot the poore brydo
keep foote with all dauncors, and
refuse non, how scabbed, foule,
drunken, rude and shameless so
ever lie be." .
That It was not long before tho
expression came to be used fig
uratively In the way It hi used tn
day is evidenced by Shakespeare'v
use of It in Henry VIII:
' "I had thought they had parted !
so much honestly among them (nt
least good manners) aa not thus
to sufer a man of hifl place and so '
near our favor, to dance attendance
on. their lordship's pleasure.
