We were told then that the time was

Tbo statement of an lnternatlonally

It does in this country today, empha

One is that the United States It

are now designed with attractive and

everywhere. The American Hty ha
though, was that those who were ex-; long been known ror its ugliness In all
posedto it refused to "take." It la a
fine thing in theory to contemplate
the accomplishment of a meal by the
f-imple process of swallowing a cap
anto, And Immediately after a full din
ner It looks feasible enough. When
one baa stuffed himself to repletion,
the Idea of a capsule meal is by no
means repellant. but by some curious
tlchemy his ideas on tho subject un
dergo a complete change in the course
or several hours nd he comes to look
with locthing upon the suggestion of
making a meal on a balanced-ration
rnpBute when w-hat he craves is to
look a thick steRk in the face and dare
l; to do its wont.
The scheme to make a loaf of
bread a complete and adequate meal
suffers under the same fundamental
Handicap. The cold truth of the mat
ter Is that "getting outside of victuals''
is ah exercise tbat is by no means dis
tasteful. Man has evolved vastly In
his habits since the stone age. but
evolution has been in other directions
thanjhts fondness for exercise at the
trenchtr. If alt mankind were di
vided arbitrarily Into two classes
those who live to eat and those who
eat to live It would be found that a
reasonkbly accurate census of the
world' population could be had by
countmg the noses or the former
class.
The scientists, or the faddists, or the
fanatics whatever one choose to
term them can burn tho midnight
oil. If they so desire. In effort to hit
upon a single food that will srrpprr in
proper balance all the requirements
of the hnman body, but the time will
never corn e when the hostess who
load her table with an appetising,
even If devastating, variety of com
forts for the inner man, cannot twiddle
her fibgers In a popularity contest at
the competitor who setsj before her
gufnta perfectly balanced capsule or
a slice of bread so compounded an to
contain all tho elements of nourish
ment that are needed.

WORK FOIl 1 :i NsTKI V
. The League or Nations has asked
Dr. Einstein, or relativity fame, to be
come a member of Its committee for
international co-operation. The emi
nent scientist has accepted, but ud
mlta that he doesn't know yet what Is
expected of him.
According to one dictionary, rela
tivity, in its 'philosophical ienae,
means: 'State of close dependence on
another, aa of the solar system upon
the sun. Reciprocal dependence, as
that between the individual and so
ciety." This sounds more understand
able than relativity In physic, which
has to do with light, velocity and other
more or less Involved matters.
Perhaps the League feels that Dr.
Einstein Is peculiarly fitted to tackle
problems which have proved to be
almost too large for the regular diplo
mats. Or possibly that organisation
wishes to keep him so husy working
out harmony among nations that he
can't spring nny new doctrines ' on
civilization until more of his fellow
beings have grasped the meaning of
the theories ha baa already onnouncod.
KCOhWa, Ore., Juno iTo the
Editor.) I would like to comment
briefly on O. 11. Jones letter appear
ing In tho Register of Juno is in re
ly to my statement tn the same Uwue.
Mr. Jones makes Iho statement ib.it
tho teacher committee recommended
tho elimination of tbo art and music
supervisors. Tho facta art that tin
entire board dismissed these cam
prior to tho meeting of the commit!
and had decided upon tho dropping of
tbo supervisors. The placing or their
nnmcs upon the committee' report
was mere formality. Of the seven
officials imrtictputlng In Iho original
discussion 1 was tho only one to op
pose In any way tho dismissal of tho
supervisors. Mr. Jones seems to wish
to convey the impression that I was
In some measure responsible for thi
action. Ho knows that 1 actively op
posed It from the beginning.
I oncoming the unomcul meeting
which Mr. Jones enutnoiato, one was
ttmoctlMg of th entire board, another
was a meeting of tho c4jnbor com
tntttov tu whnii Mr. Janes was Invited
(Ii- did not attend. Mr. l.lhby was
out o( town and tr. li.ni!. could not
the reached. The r. ults of this meet
Ing were reported to the b oard at Us
next -nooting. As to ihenrrieiai meet
lug of May 14 the facts are an follows
1 did tell Mr. Joins prior to elation
day that 1 would bo on tin- election
board on Friday and I also told him
that I would be at M-turud's. too poll-
tug place, if wanted. He stated thai
tho timo of meeting would probably
be Friday or Bniurdejj depending on
word from Mr. Libby who was aspect1
d in for election. That was the extent
of my notification. Three or four
days after election I telephoned Or.
Marti- and asked if ho would not call
i board meeting. To my surprise he
told mo they bad had a meeting on
Friday evening. That was the first I
knew of It. Mr. Jones later explained
to me that he had received a letter
from Mr. Llbby after talking to me
and then 'phoned to nil the other
member) of tho board and found that
they could meet more conveniently on
Friday thun on Saturday. Both Mr.
Jones and Dr. Bart! knew that I was
anxlouw to have a meeting for presen
tation of the findings of the investiga
tion concerning the teachers. 1 find it
liupoasible to square the (gets with
Mr. Jone' statement either that I haul
boon given notice or that the other
members met "without further notic
Oeing given."
Mr. Jone.-' first sentence Is typical
of tho disingenuous character of tho
entire letter. Ho says. "Jtumors have
reached tho school board that" I was
to publish a statement concerning
some of the board's uctivltloe, etc.
Webster detlnes rumor us follows; "a
current story paslng front ono person
to another without any known auth
ority for its truth." Now on Friday
evening I mot Dr. Itartle by appoint
ment and read to him my statement
oxactly as It appeared two days later
In the Heglster. Saturday afternoon
I learned that the board was to pub
lish a reply to my letter and I called
up Dr. Hurtle to ask if tbat were true.
He told me that he hud asked Mr-
Jones to prepare a reply. 1 inquired
if he did not think I should have been
accorded the same courtesy that I
hud shown him. and ho replied tlmt
he did not think that Mr. Jones had
made any offort to communicate with
me. Woll. anyway. Webster certainly
stands corrected.
