Rod settled back to endure the
rest of the ride in silence.
TT was daybreak when the driver
turned off the state highway and
took the road to the Palmer country
home far out on the South Shore of
Long Island. The house, set a quar
ter of a mile back on the blue stone
driveway, appeared dignified and
peaceful in the early morning light.
Moat of the windows were shut
tered, but a few on the second floor
showed drawn blinds. There was a
wooden door, used to close the house
miring the family's sojourn In the
South orabroad, leaning against an
outside wall.
Hod understood. Marco was using
the house In his parents' absence.
He instructed the taxi driver to
wait for him, and walked up to. the
door to ring. As he reached forth
his hnnd he saw with surprise that
the door was not on the latch. It
swung open a few inches and Rod
obeyed an impulse to enter without
ringing.
Inside a strange sight met his
eyes. The furniture of the hall was
still shrouded in linen covers and
the floor was bare. Top coats and
hats wore thrown over chairs and
on stands, indicating that Marco had
not brought a butler out with him.
But those carelessly-placed coata
and hnts were a welcome sight to

Rod Raw a piano with a torn rec
ord trail! hit out of It like a ghcantic
ticker tape. The floor waa marked
by dnnrini? feet and some of the
covered fti rnltnre was heaped in
piles, or overturned. A few ehatra
and a davenport near the fireplace
pinned to the back, waa a corsage
of orchids.
Rod turned grim at the sight of
It Bertie Lon and orchids. Did ahe
get po many that ahe cared little for
them ? But who would think of

have been?
T) OD struggled hard against the
memory of Lfla'a words. Had It
been his fault that Bertie Lou was
receiving orrhids? Could he have
Mopped It If he'd tried? But they'd
agreed to remember their marriage
vows until they wanted them broken
legally.
For half a moment Rod believed
In Bertie Lou without doubt. Then
he thought of LUa of her triekerv
and faithlessneBa. Women were
devils! Bad! A man was a fool to
trust one of them! Rod would know
soon. He'd find Bertie Lou some
where in this warren of sleeping
revelers and wring .the truth from
her!
He' took the stairs two at ft time,
his feet makinc but little round on
the thick paper that was laid over
the silencing rubber pads. When he
reached the scond floor landing, a
broad, spacious central hall In real
ity, he paused to look about him.
There were three corridors leadins
to the sleeping rooms. Rod could
see down the one on his right with
out moving. He took a step In that
direction when a man's voice down
the corridor that led to the rooms
in the bark wing attracted his at
tention. He heard an Indistlngulsh
nlil feminine murmur In reply.
He turned to the left and when

ridor he wns Just In time to sea ft

turned from a twelve dava' trip to
southern California. They visited
Catalina Island, IOs Angeles, Holly
woud, Beverly Glenn, at which places
they have relativea. Tbey report a
fine time but glad to be home in Ore
gon.
Mr. Hutch enson and Myra Dell of
Hebo visited at the T. Kimball home
Saturday night and Sunday morning.
They drove to Eugene Sunday where
Miss Myra Dell la to enter Eugene
hospital for removal of tonsils.
Word was received today of the
passing away of Mrs. Ruby Rowman
in southern California where ahe was
taken a short time ago In (he hopes
thnt a change would Improve her
health. No funeral arrangements
have been made but the body is en
route to Junction whore interment
will he msde.
