Luke's promotion was granted, but,
alas, to late. His unjoin Uncut to
tuo grnde ot r irst ljieutenanc was
made on November Oth, 11)18. The
unclaimed commission was revoked
more than a year later on November
11th, 1019.
On November 3rd, with the German
armies in flight and the end of the
war only a tew days away, Captain
Griint wrote another letter. Stili
without news of Luke's fate, he turned
over the leaves of the irus-sing flyer s
record and came to a decision which
few officers are ever called upon to
make. It involved an additional honor
for Frank Luke. Tbe armies of the
world have many decorations which
are given in recognition of va'.or;
medals are a part of war, and the
soldiers and sailors of the United
States won their share of such dec
orations in 11)17 and 1918.
The Supreme Award
There is one decoration which is
never given except under the condi
tions of the most extraordinary hero
ism. Only ninety of these medals
were won by Americans in the lnte
war and only one was awarded to an
aviator. That award was made at the
suggestion of Captain Grant as set
forth In the following letter

(The CLOCK
on this range
keeps you out of
the kitchen
YOU can prepare dmncr, place it In
the oven Of this electric" range, and
then forget it until meal time. You do
not even have to go out to the kitchen
until everything is ready to serve.
Just set the clock at the hour you
wish cooking to start. The clock
automatically turns on the current.
When the oven reaches the right heat,
the thermostat turns it off. No current
is wasted, as cooking is finished by
stored heat, as in a fircless cooker.
