Education f-r appreciatlm, as well
as trainirg for specialised work was
declared the big tuk of educators to
lay by l'r. Havid Sneddon, professor
of education at Teachers' College, Co
lumbia university, who spoue at the
assembly of summer school student
of the Cniversay of (.iregou. IH'.
Nneddou defines vducationap metlunis
into two classes, the ohjecitve and the
appreciative, naming these the "Al
pha" and "Peia" methods.
Taking geography its an example,
Dr. Sneddou poinud out the fact that
the subject as now taught was far too
complicated, and too crammed with
detail to be interesting to the aver
age student. This subject could be
cut down to essentials, and the great
bulk of matter left to those who wish
to specialise in a field imolving ex
tensive geographic study, he pointed
out. Thus ail students would gam an
appreciation of the subject, and some
could become specialists.
Principle ia Use
This principle is already being
adopted in regard to tmiMc, said Dr.
ueddon. In many schools technical,
highly specialized music is given lo
those who show special talent, while
the great bulk of students are taught
a realization of values, and au appre
ciation of what is really fine in the
art.
"Today almost everyone that
amounts to anything ia a specialist
in some distinct line." said Dr. Sned
don. "For example, teaching now em
braces Hiiuio UO specialized depart
ments, ami other professions aud
crafts are likewise Hiibdivided. For
things other than the specially, a per
son must depend upon uuperficial
ideas. An economizing process is go
ing on, whereby the exercise of a real
depth is saved for a person's major
interest.
Appreciation Held Need
"Hut in order not to become too
narrow, this superficiality must be
tempered with an appreciation of what
is going on, and this is wlmt educators
must concern themselves with iu the
future, s specialiatiou comes more
and more to the fore.
"Appreciation should bo taujiht to
the child in such a way that the es
sentials can be assimilated, and it
should be a separate ami distinct ob
jective from teaching for specialixa
tion.' ,
