Swimming Holes Popular
"Whew, but its hot! I.efs go
swimming." This is a familiar re
mark by a large pprcrntago of the
city's population these afternoons
while the thermometer is flirting with
the 100 mark and everyone is seeking
for a new way to keep cool. The fav
orite swimming resort in Kttgene is
at the mill race, as evidenced by al
most 2M) persons who donned their
bathing suits and Bought relief inits
cool waters yesterday afternoon. The
plunges at the 1. M. C. A. men's
gymnasium and at the women's build
ing on the campus are alpo operating
to capacity, but the running-water
stream is proving most popular of all.
Children, too, had n great time frol
icking in their special tswimmnig hole
at the millrace, under the watchful
fare of grownups. Hundreds of cit
izens took to their automobiles yes
terday afternoon and left for the
quiet and cool retreats on McKenzie
