That' alt swimming is, but if you
want to drown yourself and get to

This is the statement made bjr Com
modore W. K. Longfellow, assistant
national director of the American
lied Crows life Having service In
comnuiuicittioii to Miss Grace Nor
ton, executive secretary of the Lane
county chapter of the American Ke
Cross.
"The human body is lighter than
water." the Commodore explained,
"and very little effort will cnahle
anyone to Vie on his back and paddle
easny witn the hands. In this way one
can stay u fur a long time. To
rescue another by swimming usually
requires either a good side stroke
or a good breast stroke, a these have
a kivk ?fmvmt enough to enable a
swimmer to propel both himself and
another person who is being eonfra?Mf
by the hands of the swimmer. In de

" J f over-1 urncd f rom a boat or
canoe, stick to the boat. If the
rest of the body is kent submersed
a wooden row boat or wood and can
vas canoe will hold up the heads of
a number of persons for hours. "
Commodore Longfellow said that ca
noista around Portland, are rated
among the most expert in the whole
United States.
Most swimming fatalities occur dur
ing the months of May and June, he
cause the water is stilt cold from
the winter suows and ice and people
are Mill soft from their indoor in
activities of the winter. Those who
have been swimming nil winter in
swimming pools have kept up their
endurance in the water and are more
nearly ready for emergencies. Kvery
person should practice, life-saving
every time ho ' goes swimming, the
speaker said.
