WASHINGTON, Juno 18. (By the Associated
Press) Senator Robert M. LaFollette, for many years
a stormy petrel of American politics died here today.
He was 70 years of age.
Death resulted at 1:21 p. m. from heart failure
induced by a general breakdown and an attack of bron
chial astjima.
The Wisconsin senator and later in
dependent presidential candidate be
gan failing in health even before the
101M campaign. Several weeks ago, he
contracted a severe cold which devel
oped into asthma.
Heart Gives Way
His heart, which has been unable to
stand the strain, gave way during the
night and he sank rapidly after day
light today.
Although they realized the serious- I
ness of Senator I.nl-'olIettesV condi
tion, members of his family had hoped
until today that he would recover.
Iiiist n:ght his physicians said he was
resting but ncverthelef s he took a
o,uick and decided turn for the worse
in the night hours and hope was aban
doned. Senator I,aKolIette long was a vic
tim of angina pectoris, a heart ailment
and this, with his asthmatic attack,
caused him to suffer greatly from
shortness of breath. Violent coughing
spells accompanied liis illness.
Cheerful to Last
Almost to the last, however, he in
sisted on cheerful reports being given
out'as to h's illness and it was not
until "ycsterdiiy (hat it was admitted
that liis condition was serious.
