hension of whit ninrrinee involves

''Once at ibe altar." smiles the rec
tor, "she has all tho humility nnd

Itev. Hny hntHpitN to ndd Hint the
"Little Church" in no (iretna (Jreen
nnd issues warning lo those youth
ful sweelhearls who, in the Juno sea
son, plan runaway marriages.
About L'5 per cent of the persons I
who come to the "Little t hurch to
be wedded are given a cordial greet
ing, a bit of advice but no ceremony.
While 7",000 couples have been wed .
since the day,- some 7H years ngo,
when the Itev, Ceorge II. Houghton ,
founded the church with a borrowed
room nnd few handmade benches,
morft thnn "UMK have u"t met the
church requirements.
And t hat is where .Miss Mary Ilau
lon, the rector's secretary, comes in.
She interviews all the applicants.
The "Utile Church' will not mnrry
divorcees, elopers, those who hnve
not been baptized nnd Ihose who have
not tho consent of their parents.
Youthful runaways are shown the
seriousness of the wedding obligation.
"On several occasions," recalls
Itev. Itay, "they have telegraphed
from the church and received tho con
sent of parents by return wire nnd
on others we have went scores of them
buck to their homes, sobered and con
trite. '"Yet I fnvor young marriage hut
not too young. Young couples build
their lives together through the
years. The.v come to have a great
unity of interest that binds them close
in the years to come. Commercial ele
ments begin to enter ns marriage Is
delnyed and the' people mnlure. Tho
romantic psychology enters into June
weddings and probnhly pbiys a large
pnrt in the Insting quality of marriage
rontrncted in Hint month. Our statis
tics show that marriages in June nnd
weddings in the Little Church du
hold, for some reason or other.
"The romantic tradition clings long
after the ceremony. Thousands of
couples return1 to the church for their
nnniversnries. K towers come years
afterward, commemorat:ng a cere
mony. Mothers nnd fathers, married
in the church, bring babies to be bap
tired. They come ncross the conti
nent with daughters or sons who con
template weddings. And we nro
swamped with letters asking ndvice
on every conceivable love prnhlem.
"And sometimes I enter the church
and see a widow sitting in her girh
of black. There are many of thqse.
They come hark quietly and alone f
recall in the hours of grief the happy
memories of the wedding day.'
Through the doora of the rectory
pnss thousands of varying chapters
of a great city's comedies and trage
dies. It is the tradition, established by
the Itev. Houghton and his nephew
who followed him. thnt the doors
should never be closed. When the
Little Church" was established it was
but n few blocks from the morgue and
the tenderloin of the old days.
To this dny, says the new rector,
friendless men and women, looking
toward death, bring in a request for
the church to bury them. Some leave
a little sum for their burial sermon.
I although the prospect of death be
j years off. Out of the night often
f comes a girl with a story of rhame.
I A disheartened young woman tempt
ed to 'end her life in the river, stops
for a benediction and leaves with a
picture of a brighter future.
A man. nbout to be married, fum
bles in hts pocket; drops of perspira- i
tion nppear on h's forehead; his fare
grows flaming red. He has put the .
wedding ring in his vest and hasn't j
worn the vest. j
A man in army uniform enters. ;
He bears the picture of a woman.
Hoes the secretary remember having
seen this woman? The secretary nods. !
Yes, she was married a few months 1
ago. "f.reat fJod this is my wife!
I was ffverwens ; Three lives n re
wrecked." The secretary recalls that !
the woman began to weep when t he
reremony had ended and had won-'
ilered why.
Thus pnss through the doorvny of
tho "Little Church'' both sunshine '
and tears. j
. Hut now. it Jr June nnd sunshine. !
The green vines tin nee with gold in
the nfternoon sun. And the rector. I
who smiles with nn all-encompassing
sympathy upon the varying parade,
watches the young couples come tim-iflh-
through the gate.
"No." hp fays, "brides do not !
change from one generntion to the
other. For women do not change at j
heart." I
