Tho number of vtudents in the
graduating cJ asses of the University
of Oregon lias shown a considerable
increase since the first graduating
clans of J87H, Five students re
ceived diplomas in 1878 nnd this year
10 will be graduated, tho largeKt in
the history of ttie university, which
iti an increase of 8.'i(K jwr cent.
With the group this year the total
number of graduates. ftr the 48
classes, will be 4784. Tho number
this year is 8 per cent of the entire
number graduated during the past
47 yeni-H. Jn the pout ten years,
including WJo, the number totaled
'J'.iH'J as compared with U-io'2, who re
ceived diplomas the first 38 classes
of the- university, which shows that
the school has graduated nearly as
many in the last ten years as in the
first 38.
For the first 18 years from 1878.
the number of graduates In no year
reached the 5( mark, ujk! 181)3, with
a class of 40, was the nearest ap
proach. In 1800 tho total reached
8.', and the following year, 18i)7, 80,
and the figures show a decrease up
to 1007. The degree of Bachelor of
Scientific Didactics was conferred
only one year, 187, and six students
received degrees.
Diplomas were awarded to 11- in
VMH, the first year that the 100 mark
had been reached. The following two
years showed a decrease, but in 1010
tin number increased to 134.
Two hundred three were graduated
in JOia. and tho following year :!)-',
mid it was not until 1020, when liUO
graduated, that the total agfi'n
reached the 200 mark. The past five
years have shown a considerable in
crease and the Jutt this year is 78
more graduates than iu 1U-4.
During the first ten ' years, from
3878 to JKNH, the number of gradu
ates was only ll'O. The following ten
years, 18K to 1818, the total in- .
crposed to 420. From 1S08 to 1008,
although tho increase was not so
great, the number was 000. and this (
figure was more than doubled from
V.hiH to 1018 when the graduates num- 1
bered loll. During the last eight,
years, including 102., the number was
2122, an. increase of OIL over the
previous ten-year total.
Although the number of graduates 1
this year is the largest in the history
of the university, the officials believe ,
that the number in 1020 will prob- !
ably be greater. j
