Puzzle Plays
rJTIKItti are runners on first and
third nnd one out. The balsman
hits a long fly in deep center field.
The runner on third feels that he can
easily bent a throw to the plate if
the bull Is caught ami holds his base.
Tho runner on first is certain the
fielder would not nialto the catch and
runs wild. The fielder catches the ball.
The runner on third dashes for the
phile the moment the hall strikes Ihe
fielder's hands. The runner, original
ly on first, is almost In third base
when the ball in caught.
The center fielder throws the ball
(o the second baseman, who touches
that bane. The runner, originally on
first, trying to regain that base after
Ihe catch, is still several yards from
second on his way back when the ball
is held on I hat base.
The second baseman then rolls Ihe
ball in the direction of the pitcher
and Ihe (earn iu (he field starts for
tho bench, believing the Hide has been
retired. The bum; runner continues
back to first base.
Hid Ihe run count and was the side
retired?
The Antwor.
The side whs not retired when Ihe
second bane man held the ball on that
base in advance of tin1 runner who
was trying to return to first.
In order to retire Ihe runner he
must be touched wilh Ihe ball or have
the ball I brown to the base be occu
pied nt the tiiun of the hit, which In
this ease was first base.
Tho runner had a right lo continue
on to first after the ball had been
mlled Into the Infield, lie was safe nt
that base. The run, at course, counted.
