In 1015 there were 2,4-K,GG0 auto
mohiles in this country.
It seemed a tremendous number.
Some people were already talking
about "the saturation point" being
not far ahead.
But if there were some men who
couldn't see the woods for the trees,
there were others whose faith never
faltered. '
It took a lot of vision for them to
see that the true market for the auto
mobile had hardly been touched.
It took a lot of courage for them
to bank on the ultimate success of
the automohile in that market.
They had both.
Back in 1D15, the United States
Kubber company said "The real fu
ture of the automobile is not in the
big cities hut away , from them."
It is not in short runs on city,
streets, but in mile after mile on
country roads."
So back in 191"i the United States
Rubber company began to prepare
for this movement and to help it.
In IIH") ten years ago the first
IJ. S. Tire advertising began to ap
pear in the "home town" papers,
Few. people snwi these papers in
their true dimension.
Few realized the influence they had
on what the people thought and did
and wore and bought. Because few
people realized the place they filled in
the minds and lives of their readers.
The United States Rubber company
saw.
As clearly as it saw that the devel
opment of the automobile would be in
the smaller communities, it saw that
the people in these communities would
have to have tires to measure up to
the service and tire merchants up to
them.
And it sAv that in the "home town"
newspapers it had, ready to hand, the
medium to help it put tire merchan
dising where it would have to be in
the new era of the automobile.
So ten years ago people began to
read the first U. S. Tire advertising
in their "home town" paper over the
name of their "home town" dealer. '
They have been rending it ever
since. .
They have seen these home dealers
develop their little "side line of tires"
into rent business always with tho
support of "I S." advertising in
these local papers.
t'o-incident with the tenth anniver
sary of "home town" advertising by
the United States Rubber company,
'his company announces another long
step forward in the perfection of au
tomobiles tires the greatest since the
introduction of the cord itself in its
perfected Latex treated Web ( 'ord
Royal Balloon Tire with the flat low
pressure trend.
Today there are 1(1,00(1,000 automo
biles in this country.
S I per cent of them are owned by
men and women on the farms and in
the smaller communities,
Where there was one U. S; tin
dealer in the small towns then there
are hundreds today real merchants.
What was only a vision in 101.") has
come true in 10"o.
LOS ANGELES, June 0. Motor
ists belonging to the Automobile Club
of Southern California now have the
assistance of the club to pay for their
automobiles and for their auto insur
ance. This Is a new form of club service
offered motorists.
The organization has made arrange
ments with a large securities company
to finance purchase of automobiles
for its members and to arrange for
payment of insurance premiums. Since
it is'estimated that 80 per cent of the
cars bought today are taken out on
the deferred payment basis, this work
is expected to increase the activities
of the club considerably. Its mem
bership is 107,000. .
In the financing of premiums for
their auto insurance, members may
now apportion these amounts over
the year, as they do-their payments
on their cars. .
These facilities practically com
plete all the transactions relating to
the ownership and operation of nn
automobiles, mode entirely within the
club service.
Insuring the motorist for automo
bile liabilities and other automotive
security has been part of the club's
work for some years. It has brought
down the auto rates considerably and
has even helped reduce insurance
costs in southern California.
