OFF INTO RIVER
An expensive bridge aecident one
that will probably cost the county ap
proximately occiirretl yester
day, when th Kerjuson bridge across
ihe Long Tom river broke from its
moorings as it was being raied by a
bridge crew, and slid off into the
river.
'I tie br'ulge is SO ftet in length, and
was built more than a year ag. J!e
eause it was low, the bridge was vir
tually useless m the high water sea
son as the floor was covered by the
water. Workmen were instructed to
raise the level f,vir inches by Ar
thur Striker, county bridge builder.
After the span bad been raised
.'tj inches at one end the workmen
started to apply the jack fr the re
inaiu.'ng half inch. The hi structure
started to wobhle. someone yelled to
get out of the way as it was breaking
loose, and it then slid off into the
water, cm eking several of its big
board reinforcements in two.
County court members took the ac
cident philosophically.
"It's very fort una t e no one was
killed." commented Clinton Html. "It
was just one of those accidents in
which no one in particular was to
blame. Much of the bridge can be sal
vaged, however, and work will begin
immediately hi putting it back. This
t:me it will be built at the proper
level.'

Springfield chamber of commerce
rooms on "The Growing Fraternalism
of Women.' The affair was held
under the auspices of the Springfield

the growth of women's position in pol

historical sequence. She drew anal

the foreign countries which she re
cently visited. American women were
declared in advance of the women of

regard, but Mrs. Krnst expressed the
belief that in those countries, too,
there is an increasing comrndship be
