Hilly Evans Says-
By BILLY EVANS
HAVE a mighty good ball club,"
remarked Connie Mack to me
when I dropped in on his club at Ft.
Myers, Fla., during spring training:.
"The stuff is there, all the boys
need is the will to win. "The moment
they are of the opinion that -the Ath
letics is a mighty good club, it is go
ing to be a bard team to beat.
"The A's have been a second divis
ion club for so many years, it is a
difficult matter to get the players in
a different frame of mind.
"My ball club this year Is a first
division aggregation. Any team that
sticks around the first division has
a chance to win a. pennant.
"All the boyB need is the will to
win, the proper mentnl attitude.'
Then the geninl Connie excused
himself to lead the boys In skull
practice, as all baseball gatherings
are known, prior to going on the ball
field.
The Athletics were to meet the
New York Gianta that afternoon and
Mack wanted action.
In the two games prior to the con
test with the Giants, the Athletics
had been beaten, pfayed sloppy ball.
Mr. Mack wns far i-om pleased.
What Mr. Mack Baid to his pro
teges that afternoon will always re
main a mystery. Suffice it is to nay
that the words instillpd into the
noble athletics the will to win.
' In the first two innings Simmons

and Ha user hit for home runs, one
of the wallops coming with two on,
the other with the bases loaded. The
Athletics won the game in a canter.
During the first month of the
American League race the Athelettcs
have performed with the will to win
and have been in the first division
all the way.
Baseball Puzzlers
JT IS the last of the niutb and the
home team hi trailing by one run,
the score being 4-3.
With runners on second and third
and two out, the manager of the homo
team sends in a pinch-hitter to bat
for the catcher.
The pinch-hitter fails to notify the
umpire of the change. On the first ball
pitched he hit safely, scoring bota
runs needed by the home team to
win the game, 5-4.
The team in the field then discov
ered that the batsman who had bit
j safely was a pinch-hitter who had
neglected to make known nis entry
into the game.
They raised the contention that
such a failure made him the improper
batsman and that the catcher, the
proper batsman, should -be called out
because of the cerelessness.
What about it?
The Answer.
The home team won the game, 5-1.
The two runs driven over the plate
by the una bounced pinch-hitter count
ed. While the pinch-hitter was at fault
when he failed to notify the umpire of
the change, yet the omission did not
make his hit void.
The rule states that the substitute
wrho enters ' the game immediately
takes the place of the regular in the
lineup and that any of his acts are
legal, regardless of whether he is
properly announced.
