Puzzle Plays
Itunnera are on first and second.
The pitcher prior to delivering the
1 (bull to the batsman makes a deceptive
, linove toward first base, which the
; umpire rules a balk.
The pitcher, not aware that the
umpire line so ruled, delivers the ball
to the batsman, who hits over the
left field fence for a home run.
The score at the time was 4 to 2 In
favor of the team in the field. Three
ruiia crossed the plate on the drive
over the fence, apparently putting the
tram at bat Into the lead, 6 4.
What is the proper ruling on such
play?
Answer
When the umpire ruled that the
pitcher had made a balk, play was im
mediately auspeuded.
The fact that the pitcher did not
hear the call of balk and delivered
the bull to the batter, who iu turn
bit it over the fenco, cannot be given
any consideration.
No action was poaaiblo after the
rail of balk. It rendored the home
run void. The ball waa dead when
delivered to the batsman.
The only ruling poasfble waa lo
make the bauroiau hit over and ad
venes the runners on first end second
ito second and third.
