That a commuuity chorus Is of civic
value, is being demonatrated now in
Kugene as ft has been In many other
riiicH that rank with us In spirit,
growth and commercial Importance.
A choral organization known as the
Eugene Philhsrmonic Society existed
Keveral years ago under the leader
Hhtp of Mr. Kalph Lyman, but during
the war It was discontinued. However,
it has lived in spirit, and it has long
been the wish of Dr. John J. Lends
bury, dean of the school of muwie,
and Mr. John fltark Evans, associate
dean to restore this society to its
former place of importance. I has,
however, seemed wine to delay or
ganization until the completion of the
school of music auditorium.
At e word, then, this Hpring, the
abundant roota of thia cherished o
clety of the pant sent forth new
branches and e chorus of 170 splendid
voiced, an able director and n won
derful pipe organ began functioning.
From the first meeting of Ibis choral j
group, known as the Eugene Oratorio
society ft has been a living mimical
organisation, singing together happily
end helpfully, end this ia proven ny
the fact that in a few weeks a mag
nificient orntoria. "The Creation" hy
Josef Haydn has been prepared, and
will be offered to the public on May
Iff and Id nt tha Methodist church
under the able direction of John
Btark Evans.
Growth Is Told
Eugene owns a singing group. It
irew by common consent. It Is
feature of civic Importance. It Is
ours to prenerve. The necessity nf
Its fostering is npparent to most of
us and If not to everyone, it is he
cause attention has not bepn directed
toward the important! of our new
possession.
The most noticeable application of
music on a large scale was during the
wor. The government recognized the
value of e soldier who sings. Its ef
fect was electric. Singing keeps a
man's courage. Any man who, when
a boy, whistled sueceasfully when
passing a dark corner can apply this
psychology to the grown man.
If a man or woman cannot actively
tnke, part in a song, the next best
thing is to he a part of a community
that owna n choral group nil its own
a group that Is hrimmini over with
tiincM and the ability to sing them to
you with the dote set and the place
appointed.
A community chorus is not for the
individual nor for the glory of the
leader. The Idea fa getting people
together In a common cause. It pro
motes a feeling of fellowship and puts
people in an attitude to meet com
mon problems. People need to npur
themselves on. They need to furnish
themselves a little cheer no that hum
drum things tnke on brighter hues.
