SUPPORT FOR
CHARITY WORK
IS REQUESTED
Commending the -work of the
Salvation Army In I.ano county
nnd urging support of tho finan
cial campaign now under way by
the local corps, George H. Mo
Morran, pnst exalted ruler of the
Eugann lodge of Elks, Issued a
statement today.
The following is the statement
of Mr. McMorran:
"For a great many years I have
been directly or indirectly con
nected with tho charitable work
of the Salvation Army, and in
my opinion no organization getB
greater results from the amounts
spent than does tho Salvation
Army. They do a kind of work
and reach a class of people which
no other religious organization
aeems to reach. Their charity ex
tends into a field which reaches
thoso who are worthy, hut who
generally ilo not ask for assis
tance when In need because of
the seeming embarrassment and
humiliation entailed. The Salva
tion Army gives this assistance
without advertising or advising
the public who Is receiving the
benefits.
"The Elks lodge, of which 1
have had intimate knowledge for
many years. Is continually doing
charity work, and this work Is
done entirely through the Salva
tion Army. When. In doubt as
to the worthinnss of Ihe case in
question the Salvation Army is
asked to investigate, and In each
caso so far as I know, the re
ports received have been just and
fair to the persons or families
Investigated.
"From this close connection
with them I can conscientiously
say that any money put into the
hands of the Salvation Army for
charitable work will be wisely
and economically spent, and every
one who is able at all to assist
need have no fears that their
money will be wasted hut should
be glad to help finance the gooo.'
work."
tho hold It has on the masses, Is
the freedom from red tape nnd
favoritism and by showing Just
aimplo friendliness and tho desire
to servo In the most practicr.1 anil
needed way.
Before the World War, the Sal
vation Army was held up to ridi
cule but pressed onward in
work of tho Master. Living In
poverty themselves, made s;j 'by
united' sacrifices, they fed the
hungry, clothed the poor, provided
for fatherless nnd orphaned child
ren they lift up poor wrecks of
humanity who have all but lost
hope for better things. No cue
is so depraved- but what the hand
of the Army reaches out to save.
All this I know from actual
co-operation with them in a like
cause, since being a resident of
Eugene. As one who by virtue
of office has first knowledge of
conditions of disabled veterans
and their families, I have wonder
ed at the heroism of the mem
bers of the Salvation Army in
trying to make a dollar do tho
work of five in their efforts to
lessen the distress that exists
among needy ones.
Appreciation of the cbaritibls
work done b ythe Salvation Army
than contributing generously when
the solicitor calls at your door,
can be expressed In no better way
feeling confident that the nion v
so given will help much toward
alleviating the sufferings of tiu
worthy onea In their distress.
