How to Talk
r MmniaoM ramnow
baaaUkf Editor Nnr IMnrrftiM
Dktinny
Somebody hu triced ma nCoot
punctuation. I am not rare that
this subject should bo discussed
in "How to Talk" and yet that,
title might better have been
"How to Speak and Write Cor
rectly," and perhapa it would
oave been if there were time and
space to continue this series;
but it must end soon.
"So many oi my friends, my
correspondent writes, "fail to
use punctuation marks that it
nukes their letters difiiult to
read. . . . Pq you beliere
m dashes?"
Answering the query first, I
do believe in dashes and nse
them. To me they are quite
real, as well as useful when
properly employed. But to read
a hand written letter where
only dashes are used for punc
tuating, is somewhat distract
ing, to say the least
The dash denotes atitrhtry
lonuer pause than a comma
when used in its place. Then it
may properly be employed at the
end of a sentence like this one,
to indicate an aftcrthouRlif
something added to strengthen
the sense. Use it also in place
of parentheses except in tech
nical writing.
Now about punctuating social
correspondence. Business cor
respondence, through the use of
the typewriter, is always punc
tuated or mispunctuated at
times, I may say advisedly.
Writers should be as careful of
punctuation as they are of
Rrammar. Proper punctuation
often saves words and cer
tainly it renders the composi
tion more intelligible.
The novice will readily learn
the use of the three principal
marks as follows: The period
denotes a pause a full stop, ft
occurs at the end of the sen
tencewhen you come to a full
stop. The semicolon is a liilf
stop; a shorler pause. The
comma is a quarter stop,a quar
ter of a period. Music students
should compare these three
punctuation marks with notes
whole, half, and quarter notes.
With these three marks, and
by following these few remarks,
anybody should be enabled to
punctuate. Of course there are
in addition to these the colon,
used to indicate th.it something
follows; the question mark, for
use when a question is asked ;
and the exclamation point,
called a "scrccchrr" by printers,
for reasons readily rccopmcd.
Knr further particulars re
garding punctuation, consult the
one that often is called "The 3
dictionary ol dictionaries, oe
cause it contains more than the
vocabulary including a treatise
on the subject of ounctuatiou.
