Sanitation Stressed

tion in a city of our class. Therefore
we are again asking you to revote
the $00,000 sewer bonds that were
voted last year, but upon finding a
legal technicality, we must vote them
again. It was the purpose of the city
council to take a portion of this
money and start work on the drainage
of low lands 'that pass through the
central part of 'our city and pick up
the over congested sewer systems in
Fnirmount.
"We also voted last year $25,000
for fire apparatus which was pur
chased and which we 'now have but
this issue like the sewer bonds were
found irregular and we are again
asking the people to ratify their for
mer action. Fire protection we must
have, .and with our present machines
Eugene is enjoying an insurance rate
that is as low as any city in Oregon.
Now in connection with our fire, ap
paratus we are asking for $10,000 fof
repairs on city hall.

'The city hall belongs to the peo
ple and the original cost was $40,000.
How can we as good citizens for the
want of a few thousand dollars, let
this property depreciate in value. V.'e
would not think of doing so with our
homes, so why our city hall? At this
time I am going to ask every tax
payer in Eugene to vibU the city hall
and see for yourselves if you do not
honestly think that $10,000 expended
on repairs would not be a good invest
ment. "The garbage question is one that
we all should be most vitally inter
ested in for it means health and if
we do not have a he;.lthy city we none
of us want to reside therein. The
open dump ground is a great breeder
of flies and rodents and they are
the be3t agents that are known to
science to spread pestilence -and dis
ease, so let us vote the $25,000 for
the modern way 'of disposing of our
refuse by burning same, thereby elim
inating all hazards. The $0000 bond
for paving University avenue and ISth
avenue should carry as it is a needed
improvement with do way of assess
ing same to property.

Declaring that economy demanded
immediate action, the city council
wielded the knife on appropriations
for the United States employment of
fice nnd the city milk inspector's of
fice at its meeting last night. The
amounts lopped off were $4ii a mouth
for the employment office and $40 a
month for milk inspection.
Rent to be paid hereafter by the
school board for its offices on the top
floor of the city hall will be $30 in
stead of $15 a month; und the water
board will pay $75 instead of $05 a
month, the council deeded.
The new wooden bridges across the
millrace at llilyard and Patterson
streets will be built by the Olds Con
struction company for $4000, it was
voted, when it was reported there was
sufficient money in the city coffers
to budd the. structures.
