Thft thought of Jesus simply as a
ood man, and even the worship of
Jesus as supreme goodness in human
form, full 8Uort of the true aPProach
w Jesus as a aacrificiul Savior giv
ing himself, as innumerable followers
of him have given themselves, for
the sins of the world.
Why was this sacrifice necessary?
What is the meaning of Calvary? We
do Dot know. Jesus himself has not
told as. It is the law running through
til life.
The innocent sutler witn ana tor
ihe guilty. Earthly parents out of
love for their children go astray and
make moral wreck aud ruin of life.
The more deeply they iove tne
more acutely they Buffer. How could
it be otherwise?
And Jesus through In a lite ana
death revealed the fact that God is
great Father, 'who loves us, even in
our sin and rebellion, with all the love
that earthly parents have poured out
for wayward sons and daughters and
more. Earthly love is but a glimmer
icg of the divine.
So we have the beautiful saying
concerning Jesus that "Ue loved us
and gave himself for us."
Think of what that means, .uen
five almost everywhere for them
(elves, and for their own interests.
They have mndo almost a deity of
gelf-interest.
Sometimes they have called It en-
lislitened" self-interest. But into
this world, with its pursuit of self
: interest, Jesus came and ho lived for
others. It was his life, his nature, to
give himself for others.
That is the meaning ot redemption.
: Jesus represents a different principle,
; an entirely different sort of life.
There is another saying ot jesus
in these closing scenes that reveals
the depths, of this .spirit of love, this
deep sympathy with men, and this
divine yearning to save them from
their evil characters nnd ways.

DAYTON, O., March 28. Poasibly
the firHt time in history a minister
aud rabbi stood side hy aids in tho
pulpit aud declared that God la our
father" and that Jew and non-Jsw
are brothers and sinters.
This unique religious servics waa
held hers recently when Rer. Charles
Iirnaharea, Methodist minister, and
Itnhbl Hamuel Mayerbarg, brought
I heir eongregatlons under one roof
for a bight of worship.
And it was not "My God" whom
the Methodist minister Invoked; It
was not "My God" to whom the rabbi
led them In prayer. It was "Our
Ood" every time.
' The service was unique. Rev. Braa
hares sent out word that ths doora
of his church would be open to the
Jews of the city, so that the people
of his congregation and of the Jew
ish congregations could establish a
ground for understanding.
Headed by JUbbl Mayorberg, one
of the youngest and moat progressive
rabbis In the Jewish church, more
than 300 Jews attended the service.
The rahhl and his people and ths
Methodist con st Ration sat slds by
side and lifted their voices In praise
to tho aama Creator.
On Marrh 27 the services were
repeated at the synagog, at which
time Kabbl Mayerberg preached the
sermon, and Her. ltrashares asked
the benediction.
