AT FLORENCE LAKE
LOS ANGELES. March 20. 0
The Florence )oke tunnel, 15 feet
high and the snme length extending
more than 13 miles, mostly through
solid granite in a suaky line under
the high Sierras, is a construction
feat that has drawn the attention of
the engineering world. It has just
been completed.
The tunnel is one of the most Im
portant works in the Big creek-San
Joaquin river project of the South
em California Edison company. The
entire project will bring in 1.407.000
horsepower, nnd, with its transmis
sion lines, sub-stations and acces
sories, will cost $T5.00tl,fHK),
Expensive Projoct
The tunnel itself coat $17,000,000.
It was started in the fall of 1020,
ami since then without a stop the
work has been maintained in relief
shifts. The scene of operations is
2.V) miles north of !oa Angeles and
3.5 miles south of the Yosemlte val
ley. The purpose of the tunnel is
to convey water from the Florence
lake watershed, source of the south
fork, of the San Joaquin river,
through the barrier of a 10,000-foot
mountain ridge into the watershed of
Huntington lake. Huntington lake
is the reservoir of supply for the
four great units of the electric com
pany which supptise a large part of
central and southron California with
light and power.
World Records Fall
World records for tunnel construc
tion have fallen during ' the four
years' progress in the HJerran. The
13-mile bore was divided into three
sections, with two lateral adits cut
into grnnite slopes and a crew work
ing each way from each adit. The
bore whs completed a year and a
half sooner than the optimistic esti
mates contemplated whou tho tunnel
was started.
The completion of the tunnel will
be followed by the creation of Flor
ence lake, to store 31.000 ocre feet
of water at an elevation of 73KM)
feet. The total drop from Hunting
ton lake through a chain of tunnels
ami power houses to the lowest pow
er house is about 6HK) feet.
The whole project when completed
will have 80 miles of tunnel, with
about 18 power houses. The orig
inal development in the Big creek
project, started In 1012. consisted of
two powr houses developing 8S.000
horsepower.
A 220.000-volt transmission line
conveys the power genernted by these
plans 270 miles to Los Angeles.
