THAT'S the matter with Gene
Sarazen?
When the former caddy won the
United States open at Skokie in 102:
he treated colfdoin to one of its
greatest unsets. Many of the
perts regarded the happening in the
nature of a fluke.
A little later, Sarazen gnve the
lie to such a belief when he won the
Professional Golfera' association title
at Oakmont, a feat without parallel
in American eolf.
It was then freely predicted that
Sarazen would contrnue to be
prominent figure in the golfing world
for years to come, lie had the game,
youth and the will to win.
Sarazeu followed theso two vic
tories, with a defeat of the great
Walter Hagen, British open cham
pion, in a Vj-hole match for the un
official world title.
Regarded first as one of the mis
takes that occasionally happen in
golf championships, in less than n
year he had the experts referring to
hiin as the wonder goiter.
"
For years Walter Hagen has been
regarded the last word in the golf
game. Here was a young man, a
golf upstart, beating Hagen after
coming from behind.
However, Walter Ungeii is still the
outstanding figure in golf, while Sar
azen is now just the run-of-the-mitie.
In less than a year Gene lost most of
his quickly won prestige.
Why Hub sudden slump upon tne
part of .a champion?
In all probability it was too much
success in so short a time. When
Sarazen was a consistent winner on
the linl.s he was known as a plodder.
He was at his game from morning
until night.
It is doubt fid if ever a player,
through the medium of constant prac
tice, tried as hard as Sarazen to keep
at the top of his game. Then after
repeated successes there came a lull
in the practice periods.
With the lull there come a deeided
fulling off in Sarazn's piny. For
two years Snrnwn. touted as the won
der golfer, has been just on ordinary
player except in spots.
Luke Goodrich, formerly of the
First National bank of Eugene, now
au officer of the Angln-Ixiodon-Paris
National bank of San h raneiseo, join
ed the "hole in one'' club of the Eu
gene Golf and Country dub Sund iy,
when he negotiated the IMI-yard sev
enth hole in a beautifully played
mash'ie pitch from the tee. The shot
was made in the second round of the
lS-hole match in which Mr. Goodrich
and I.. H. Sigwert were paired agamM
E. I. Paine of Ivrtlaud and nay
O'Honnell of this city.
Notwithstanding the low hall of one
on the seventh hole, Mr, Goodrich and
Mr. Sigwert were defeated one up.
Later in the day, M. W. Starbuck
emulated the feat of Mr. Goodrich,
and made a hole iu tne at the a-mc
hole.
