As they leaned upon the table, read
ing the rules of the game which was
supposed to lighten their pleasure
hour, the heads of Drake and Stev
ens were not far distant; both were
so near to Mary that the scene of
her hair was in their nostrils.
"Perhaps we had better play
cards," Mary suggested. She sat up
right. Stevens breathed heavily, and
there was a glitter in his eyes as he
glanced swiftly at Drake.
"Don't let's be quitters," he
laughed queerly,

Burglars Crack
Safe at Kerry
CLATSKAjSIE, Ore., March 4.
Three burglars about midnight Monday
night cracked the safe in the office
of the Kerry Lumber company about
eight miles from here, and escaped
with $157.47 in cash, and two checks
totalling $fHIG.50.
John Ilandoler, a scaler, sleetfng
in a room over the office was bound
and gagged and relieved of a small
amount ofcash. Sometime after the
burglars escaped Ilandoler liberated
himself and gave the alarm.
