Oregon's Record.
Oregon won one game and lost one
game to the Aggies, and won one and
lost one to Wusbington. It won two
games each from Iduho and Washin;-

their only game.
Tbe Aggiea did exactly the same
think as the Webfootera. They broxe
even in their two-game series with
Oregon and Washington; defeated
Idaho and Washington State twice,
and Montana once.
In the south, California cinched the
championsiiip of the southern section
of tbe coast conference with a 17 to
18 victory over Stanford. That gave
California three games out of four.
The scores were: California 13, Stan
ford 13; California 22, Stanford 18;
California 15, Stanford 10; and Cali
fornia 17, Stanford It).
To Play California.
California will . come north next
week to play the winner of the, Aggie-Oregon
series for the conference
championship. If Southern California
represents the calibre of ball played in
the south, neither Oregon nor the
Aggies should have much difficulty in
subduing the invaders. Southern Cali
fornia, in its trip north, lost to Wash
ington, 23 to 40; the Aggies, 22 to
30, and tbe Multnomah club of Port
rand, 38 to 30.
Coach lleinhart and the Oregon
team returned last night from Seat
tle, where the Webfooters Jiad a suc
cessful road trip, winning three coast
conference games. After losing a
northwest conference contest to Whit
man, 12 to 10, in which Reinbart used

Washington State, 43 to 16;- Idaho,

rrHE tragedy of excess weight
The story of Babe Ruth will
some day be written around it.
If Bubo has tH oustandiog weak
ness it is a pronenesB to put on
weight.
Jluth is at hit best at about 210
pounds. It is reported that his pres
ent weight is closer to 250.
The prestige of Babe Ituth is cen
tered in his basebnll swing, the
healthy wallop he takes, which drives
the bull farther than any other player
in the game.
Too much fat around th waist-line
is ome duy going to ruin that swing.
It is going to break the co-ordination
that must exist for Ruth to do hiB
best work.
Every spring finds Ruth many
pounds overweight. By hard work he
has always been able to rid himself
of the excess avoirdupois before the
seaion opens.
Ruth is no longer a youngster. Tak

By JOE WILLIAMS '
JESSE GUILFORD, shambling New
England furuiar boy, reached the
heighta at the Su LouU Country club
m lUiM. Here he won the national am
uteur for the first time.
Jbew recall the playing of the thir
teenth hole in t that match against
Chirk Evans, because overhead condi
tions argued against a gallery. But
the scribes remember it, and prob
ably will a long as Guilford is still
identified with golf.
J. he thirteenth thert was a long
hole. Mot many hitters managed to
get home in two full shots. But Guil
ford did, and undor unusual circum
stances circumstances which may be
pointed to aa changing the complete
complexion of the match.
When Guilford and Evans were
well on their way, matching drives
and putts, storm clouds gathered and
fjtt'uU flashes of light shot through
the heavens.
Arriving at the thirteenth the storm
had grown In intensity. The match
was even. Guilford had the honor and
waa in the act of driving when a thun
derous boom roared through tha
skies.
Those on tha course experienced
the sensation of standing too close to
a dynamite blast. A large and rotund
Missouri policeman and they do

The contestants and the adventur
ous scribes, however, were still in
tact. And now came a mystery. What
hud happened to Guilford's shot? No
one kmtw, caddies, players, or au
vance brigade. Golf had been forgot
ten. Had the disturbance carried tbe
ball far from its destination? Mt
seemed likely. A thunderbolt capable
of flooring a cop might easily disturb
the flight of a golf ball.
A spectator produced a pair of field
glasses. "There's a white speck on
the ereen," he said, it can't be Guil
ford's bull," protested another. "That

the thunderbolt helped it get there
