Jake had watched matters keenly.
He was studiously respectful to
Drake. No ship ever sailed the seas
toasting a better or more efficient
chief; mate. And he was polite and
courteous to Wary, Never more
than that He did not break any
eliip's rules. Only when off wntch

"Oh, what lovely boats! she cried.
"And look how that old ship holds

"You muBn't go strong on appear

a laugh. Then he went ou to tell
(her about whaling, and found her a
-slowing, appreciative listener. He
itad never, even while he was cap

the Cape, seen her so wnnnly eager.
The hot blood that had made him
snatch her to him once before almost
over-mastered him now. But he got
a grip on himself, at the expense, of

and the pipe fell to the deck.
He gazed after Mary as she en

"It needs a lot o' fluff in out, sir."
"I'll comb it. fiive to me.'1
The tone was decisive. Mr. Stev
ens carried aft the cleaned and
scraped sheepskin that had been in
preparation for him ever since the
first sheep was killed on the out
ward passage. It was soft and
white, but the fleece was still tangled
in places. A comb was trimmed by
cutting out teeth, and thereafter, for
many watches, Juke Stevens might
he seen painstakingly working over
the sheepskin until it was as free
from tangle ns a babe's head, soft
as silk, and beautiful to behold.
Then one afternoon when Drake
was in the chart room, and Wary
sat at the saloon table writing In her
diary, Jake emerged softly from his
cabin, bearing the gift he had
wrought for her.
"For me?" she exclaimed In frank;
surprise, running her fingers luxuri-1
ously through the silky fleece. She
glanced up at him, lowered her guxe
and the soft color stole over her
fuce.
"It's beautiful," she said softly.
"I ought not to let you give it to
me." She picked up the lissom pelt
and buried her face in it.
"I can't make you take it," he
returned gruffly. " 'Twouldn't do
any harm though. "Was a time when
you were friendly, Mary."
She did not see his face. She
answered him out of the wooly
depths:
"Of course .IH accept it, Jake. I'm
more than grateful. And iflease
don't speak that way nbout being
friendly. Of course wo re friends.
YouVe one of the oldest friends I
have."
Jake stood his watch that evening
with a warmer thrill in his breast,
and a brighter gleam in his eyes.

His voice was so low and kindly

hot irVcllion.
"Captain Drake, you have no fault
to find with my work, 1 hope?"
"None, Mr. Stevens. And none
with your conduct, except this: I
won't have the officer of the watch
neglecting his duty for any passen
