TACOMA, Wash., Feb. 24. A ter
rific explosion, set off at 2:0 o'clock
this morning by a number of men be
lieved to have been members of a
vigilance committee organized to com
bat liquor selling in Huston,, wrecked
the building occupied by II, P. Claris,
and endangered the life of Ciark.

the explosion and destroyed the houe.
Clark waa trapped for a few moments
by the fire, but made his escape from
the burning building by crawling over
the wreckage.
Placed Under Window.
The charge which exploded with a
sound similar to that of black powdt-r
but without the usual fumes, ws
placed under Clark's two story frame
storo building in Uuston, directly b
neatli the place where Clark -was In
bed.
The fntlre front pTt of the build
ing waa wrecked. While large patches
of plaster and splinters of twisted
lumber showered about hlra, Clark
rushed toward tiie rear door to make
his escape, but be was cut oft by the
flumes resulting from the blast.
Picking up a revolver which wos in
(ho room, he then made his way over
the wreckage to the front of the
building.
Fires One Shot.
When he reached the open air, he
saw several men running about 100
feet away. lie fired one bullet at then
before they disappeared around the
corner of a building. While standing
outside the building, near where the
explosives bad been placed, Clark saw
a largo white sheet lying on the
ground. He believes that the sheet h.id
been lost hr one of the men in the
flight, and he thinks that all the dyn ri
mers wore white coverings to couceil
their features.
Clark told the police that Y) hai
been running what was known as a
"beer joint." lie said, however, that
he had received no warning to st.t;t
and hns no known enemies and h.ifl
heard of no threats against him.
Police were attempting to connect
the bombing of Clark's building to .1
warning note received Sunday evening
by K. .1. O'Connor, who operates a
pool hall a short distance from the
place which Clark ran.
