Auto iliow week In Eugene will

new accessories for tbe automobile.
No bootb will be at tbe (bow, due to
space limitations, but every item will
be attractively described at tbe show
rooms, says C. M. Urey, local manag
er, Botu Mr. Urey, and tbe assistant
uiunager, J. K. Stone, will be on lisud
at all tunes to demonstrate and to

two years ago, the number of arti
cles carried in stock bus doubled, snys

A number of new and interesting
things have been received lately, suys
Mr. Urey. A spot light that clumps
on tbe car, thereby eliminating tbe
necessity of drilling a hole for it, a
nw kind of cleaning cloth that will
not scratch even the duiutiest finish,
and red spot hub cups- for Jj'ordB are
among the late arrivals.
A JJarcey courtesy light, one for
each side of the car, lias been receiv
ed, and is meeting with a great deal
. of favor. This light will put auy
cur in "ship shape"" condition,, for
it shows red on tbe left or port side,
and green on the right or sturboard.
Other new articles are l'ermatex ra
diator compound; radio solder, and the
world famous "Monkey Grip" tire re
puir outfits.
Starting simultaneously with the
suto show wilt come the annual Wes
tern Auto supply sales, which will
continue for the rest of the month of
February. . ,
Maxwell Sets Mark
Climbing Mountain
at Tice Hill, Calif.
For the first time an automobile
bas climbed to the summit of Tice
Hill, the famous testing ground for
army motorcycles near Bakeraficld,
Cnl. The car Which made the suc
cessful ascent was a Maxwell stock
touring car carrying five passengers.
"Tice hill has always been-regarded
an an Insurmountable wall to any mo
tor car," says G. 0. Moir, local Max
well dealer. "It has been a proving
ground for motorcycles and only mo
torcycles of the greatest power, pilot
ed by tbe most skillful and daring
drivers. No one ever dreamed thot
any automobile would ever be able
to turn the summit. Thia Maxwell
accomplishment is added evidence of
the increased power and- many-Improvements
made In the good Maxwell
by Chrysler engineers in the past
year."
The difficulty of the stunt success
fully undertaken by tbe Maxwell may
well be Imagined when more is known
concerning Tice Hill. The averugc
grade Is about 60 per cent almost a
wall. It l 805 feet long. It has
no roadway not even wheel tracks
to follow. No chainB were used and
tbe cur carried Its standard tire equip
ment of 5.25-inch balloons. The climb
Is regnrdod as the moat difficult ever
attempted by an automobile.

How to compromise these two
points U the problem automotive en
gineers are facing today. To afford
clear vision, and yet keep the car
enclosed.
One-Inch Gap
Clear vision requires no obstruc
tion of glass between the driver and
the ground abead of him. This means
an open windshield.
To produce this effect, engineers
have decided that a slanting wind
shield of a certaiu design cun be
opened an inch between the upper and
lower halves to give the driver suf
ficient clear vision. It has been fig
ured that the proper windshield,
opened one inch, would afford clear
vision of from SO to 100 feet ahead
of the car, and up to 10 feet above
tho ground.
At the same time, a design has
been formulated which, wben opened,
would also keep out rain and dust.
The visor helps that.
Tho Ideal
To prevent rain being blown in
from tbe lower half of the windshield,
it is suggested that this part be tilted
slightly forward, while the upper half
be made so that it affords an aper
ture of one inch high.
This h considered the ideal wind
shield, tt Is rarely seen and then
chiefly on high-priced closed cars.
The most general type now in use
is tbe kind that has a slant of about
5 to 10 degrees toward the driver,
from bottom to top, and that opens
practically midway.
Another suggestion for improved
wiudhield design,' is the installment
of a device that would help the driver
open or shut the windshield with the
least bother. A cranking device,
worked from the dush, might achieve
this. It would relieve the driver from
taking both his hands off the steering
wheel, while driving, in order to open
or shut the windshield.
It is a troublesome task today,
that can be remedied.
Teaching Children
Road Rules Urged
Teaching children in' the public
schools the reason for traffic rules,
will incrpaso their respect for police
and ' traffic officers and create a
habitual obedience on their part to
traffic regulations, which will be di
rectly reflected in a lower accident
death rate among school children,
according to the public safety depart
ment of the California State Automo
bile association.
