IJHAKB mustered ill tho break uf
the poop with tho watch. A
mate called the names over, tho skip
per came to the rail. As the men
responded to their nameB, and moved
aside, the akipper played the 'beam o(
a flashlight over their faces, looking
for the likely helmsman. Tomorrow
the men themselves would arrange
wheel tricks and lookouts; tonight a
man would be chosen by thc'wutih
officer, and approved by Cnptain
, Stevens.
"You, Bunting, relieve the wheel,"
suid Mister Twining. ' The flashlight
flickered over Joe's placid face. "And
you there " Mister Twining pointed
Into the darkness, at a momentary
loss for the name; and the skipper's
flashlight, seeking out the new look
out, fell full upon the startled face
of Alden Talbot Drake.
"Mister, send another man' on look
out," the skipper said grimly. "Come
here, you dude!"
Drake stood before the big blond
nan with a curious feeling of ela
. tion. lie expected to hear an inter
esting opinion of himself, expressed
in vivid sailorese.
"Coma here, yon!" growled Stev
ens,' and fastened ft grip like a steel
rap on Drake's jacket "A dress
ing, and hedless, and want a smoke
so badly Id sign away my payday for
that Inch of clay you're chewing to
chalk." - .
"Cm. on!" said Joe, und they en
tered the forecastle. Already tho big
forecastle rumbled with the shearing
bow wave. Sleepers added their own
note. The bright new kerosene lamp
on the bulkheud was turned low. With
the easy motion of the Bhip clothes
swung from their pegs with a sibilant
swish, la the after ond of the port
forecastle Joe Hunting had chosen his
bunk. The only other bunk vacant
was far forward. Ileneath Joe's bunk
Tony Fernando lay, dreaming already
of his next payday. Joe seized him
by the breast of his shirt.
Drake 'suddenly wrenched free,
leaving some buttons in Steven's
grasp, and forgot all considerations
of discipline and rank In the glorious
thrill of one solid, snappy punch thnt
landed flush on the skipper's square
jaw and set him on his heels. Sur
prise had a lot to do wUh the result,
its effect lasted but a second. Drdke
struck again, a straight lefthnnd jab
to the mouth that drew blood. He
knew It drew blood; be felt the grin
after that. A terrible, white, snort

after that. A terrible whito, snort-

"Lot him stay," whispered Drake,

hauled at the furious Dago, and drew
him from the bunk so smoothly that
Drake atarcd in amazement, wonder

like a terrier, Joe took him by the
neck and pushed his face down for
him to read "Fetor Finch" on the

"See? Nah git yer dunnage outa

Tony spat Ilka a wet cat Teeth

"Here, here! None of that!" cried
Drake, thrusting forward. Joe whees'

twisted It cruelly until the knife drop

he heaved him headlong Into the bare
vacant bunk; then dragged out all
his bedding and gear and threw them
In on top of him.
"Wot'a all th' bloody racket?"
growled an awakened sailor.
"Tony drew a knife," wheezed Joe,
easily.
"Kick th' bloody bum's guts in,
then!"
"You've made an enemy," Drake
mnttered as Joe hauled out a blanket
from his own bunk and pitched it
Into "I'eter Finch's." '
"Wotta you care? Yon got a bunk,

Drake took a smoke for his supper.
Ho lay In his hedless bunk, with

every other man slept lie fell to

Drake mingled with the sailors to-
ing forward. Joe Bunting was in the
mate'a watch, too. He overtook the
fat little red man at the fore fiferail.
"And I thought you 'ad come into
