Discipline win be the foreword of
the Oregon football .team, when the
player turn out for first spring prac
tice Monday afternoon, according' to
Hichaxd B. Smith, new football coach,
who addressed the Sport Writers' as
sociation of Unirersity of Oregon at
a luncheon yesterday at the Anchor
age. Smith atressed the necessity of
discipline and adherence of strict
training rules.
His first task, he .aid, would be
to develop an efficient center and a
reliable punter. Oregon bad several
punters last year, and while Louie
Anderson was reliable, he did not at
tain distance. .'
The new mentor la of the opinion
that the pivot man occupies the most
important position on the team.
Speed and accuracy in snapping the
ball to the quarter Is what makes a
fast team, he said.
Punters Needed
"We will pick out about five or six
of the best punters and try to de
velop them," Smith remarked. "After
we have aelected our kickers we will
spend some time getting a speedy cen
ter. The ends and backfield will then
receive attention.
"Before the aeason I. ever we are
going to have two or three scrimmage
games. We have five b g gamo on our
schedule next fall and we've got to
know our stuff to succeed.
Smith thought it would be advisable
to let last year's second team be tbe
first team and lot the lcttermen work
their way up with other candidates in
to the first team.
Virgil Earl, athletic director, who
with Smith was guest of the associa
tion, told the sports writer, that Bart
Spellman would arrive next week to
take charge of the linemen.
Lettermen Eligible
All last year's lettermen . except
Captain Itced, who had graduated, are
eligible. Sinclair, 1023 star, who did
