ST. LOUIS, Feb. 2. UP) With no
outstuuding trades made by Manager
Branch Kukey to strengthen the
hurting stuff, the St. Louis Cardinals
appear to be little stronger for this
year's Nutioum drive than iu
i!2l, when they fiuUhcd sixth.
The hitting of the team last sea
son was good nud the field. ng fa r.
The piu-huig geuerally was considered
he weak l.nk. Although be vera I new
hurling prospects are l receive try
oiits, besides wuich Duster Mails, vet
erun southivaw, has been outuiueU
from Oakland, the uiitlook as a whole
is uncertu n iu this respect.
Of the veteran twirling talent,
Dickcriuan and Sotliorou pitched fair
ly good ball last season. Others who
wilt be bm-k are Haines, herdell,
Stuart and Dyer.
Mike Gonzales, the Cuban, is ex
pected to do the bulk of the catching
this year. Others are Niebergatl and
demons, with the team last season.
Three others, from the minors, will be
given tryouts.
The teams' main strength lies in
the infield, with Bottomly at first,
Unrnsby at second and Cooney at
shotstop considered as fixtures,
llorusby batted .42.1 Inst season, the
highest mark iu modern big league
history.
Third base is au open question with
Freiguu, Lester Bell aud Toporcer,
as lending candidates.
Another problem for Ilickey to
solve is the outfield. Tho Cards have
enough outfielders for two or three
teams. Blades, Douthit, lltifcy, Holm,
Muller, Myers, Stunners and Jack
Smith comprise the candidates.
Smith is considered the pick of the
lot aud almost certain t,o start in
right with Blades in left. Center field
i uncertain, especially since Kickey
m ay use Holm behind the bat.
The Cardinals will train at Stock
ton, Cat., where they will gather on
or about February 22. A schedule of
27 exhibition games has been arrang
ed on the l'acific coast.

The two were working an impor

those tough affairs where every close
decision seems to go against the
home team, thereby making much
trouble for the officials.
Kinney was working the plate,
Hildebrand the buses. The protests
for the afternoon had been about
even-up.
Tho blow-off came in the final in
ning of the game, when Finney called
a. visiting player safe at the plate
witii the run that eventually won the
ball game.
In those days the umpires fined the
players if they protested a decision
too Btreuuoitsly. Fiuuey plastered
fines from $3 to $15 on a half dozen
players but the kicking continued.
Hildebrand, the senior umpire of
the two, annoyed at the delay, walked
to the plate and believing thut he
might break up the argument, re
markf ':
"Vuiia-e in, Kirney, get the game
started. The gang is, trying to make
a joke out of u."
It will cost you ten bucks for
thinking that way."' said Finney, woo
iiad his back to Hildebrand and im
posed the fine before he realised who
was the culprit.
"It's too expensive up here," said
Hildebrand as he hiked back to bis
position at first base.
Itealixiug Finney's mistnke, the
players got u real kick out of um
pire fining brother umpire. However,
it bad the desired effect, dispersed
the mob.
That evening in the dressing room
Finney remitted the fiue.
