SAN FRANCISCO, Jan. 3. OP)
The four horsemen of Notre Dame
were riding along in the path of the
Colifornia missions today from Los
Angeles to Han Francisco, a bitbnt
tcred and bruised as the rough ride
they were given in defeating the Stan
ford football team on New Year's dny
but still enger to participate in the
reception which awaits them when
they trot through the Golden Gate
tonight, T,lie victorious Notra Dame
eleven cast a flirtacious eye yesterday
on proposals for a game with the
undefeated University of California
team which defeated the University
of Pennsylvania eleven on New Year's
day. Tho tentative date was fixed as
January 10 by the football experts
nl for three editions yesterday the
California public hod Its appetite
whetted for a game which would de
cide tho football championship of the
United States. The California play
ers were ready for the whistle.

Knute Itockne, Notre Dame coach, ,
who had been considering the propos- i
nl for a game with California all day.
visited the Pasadena hospitals and !
the form charts there showed Harry
Htuhldreher, his quarterback, with a
(broken ankle bone in a cast, Joe Hach
ffiad a strained vertebrae a ml liill Cer-
ney's two fractured ribs, all evidences
of the Stanford struggle, which caus
ed the Notre Dame mentor to shake
bis head.
"The football is over," said Itockne.
"I have not been nppioached with any
proposal to hold a game in Los An
geles on January 10 and don't know
who would make it." ; .
"Notre Dame came to the Pacific
coast to pluy one game and one game
it will be. I'm taking my boys back
to their studies and will meet no other
western eleven."
Graduate Manager Lute Nichols of
California refused to consider the
plea of members of the alumni for n
post-season game with Notre Dnine.
Nichols unid the California players
have already forfeited two weeks of
their vacation period and it would
hardly be ftiir to usk them to give up
the balance of their time to prepare
for a game with Notre Dame.
The usual method of dismantling
valves which are carried in cages is
to compress the spring in a tiro and
then remove tho pin. Ihis method
though satisfactory in n way, is Blow.
If the amount of such work is fluffi
cient to warrant it, the making of a
tool will prove profitable as a com
plete set of valves can quickly be dis
mantled with less exertion than by
using a vise. A flatpiece of iron is
first bent to a U shnpe. One end
Jh then given a quarter turn and
drilled in three or four plncen so that
the head of n screw carried on the
end of the lever will pass through
These holes are then filed at the top
to a pear or keyhole shape, to allow
the body of the screw to pass through
easily. This permits the screw to be
inserted into the hole, but prevents
it from slipping out accidentally. The
other end of the IT piece is given a
quarter turn and then bent over, so
that the lever will slide freely be
tween tho two parts. A series of
holes are then drilled through both
