say:
Moderale but spolly business has
characterized the wool mnrket this
past week and Hie year has closed
with pi-Ices virtually firm, especially
s on wools suitable for the woolen mills.
On llit-so tjpes even a little more

occasionally. Contracting in the west
appears to have slowed down n bit
but . prices asked by the growera are
no lower.
The foreign markets have been
quiet for the most part or closed al
together during the holiday scusou
and the trade is trying to gauge the
probable levels of value on which tho
second half of the Australian season
will open. South 'American quotations
regained some of I heir lost strengt h
through the strengthening in exchange
rates. Yorkshire is quiet but firm.
The manufacturing situation is not
material y changed although the mills
are hardly so active as IJiey were
lust month. Interest is centering on
the opening of heavyweight goods, tho
date for which has not yet been set
by the leading factor. It Is believed
hut any advances will be of a mini
mum nature. -

Regulatory Drink
Bill Passes Free
'State Lawmakers
DUBLIN, Jan. 2. W The
Free Stato government's bill to reg
ulate tho sale of drink has passed
tho senate. Among other things it
restricla the houra of sale to 13 a
dny and puts clubs of all classes ou
the same footing as ordinary drink
huIooiih as far aa the serving of lhi
uor is concerned. ;
An interesting provision of the now
law ia tho Ntandardlzution of the sine
of' porter i bottles. These bottles
formerly averaged 12 to tho gallon,
but many publicans, while charging
the anmu price per bottle, hiivo re
cently been putting a gallon into 10
bottle. This la tho government's
first attempt at promoting temper
ance. Its next move, it la announc
ed, will bo to diminish tho number
o drink shops. There aro 15,000 of
them in the. Freo State, or one to
every 250 citizens. In England the
proportion ia one to every 415, and
in Scotland one for 005. It is hoped
to reduco tho Free State's 15,000 by
nt least one-half, and a commission
is being set up to determine how it
cnn be done and how compensation
is to bo provided.
