Moat Of the ornhftn, !..,
both parents durng the Great War,
so mat tnejr scarcely know what it
is to hare a real parent Nor did they
know what childhood was until the
Americans supplied them with tovs,
games, pictures, taught them the spir
it of play, and made it possible for
them to romp end frolic oa the broad
fields of their native country. To set
great masses of them at play, in their
immaculate garments of white, their
dean, bronzed, happy faces, is a sight
that cannot fail to affect the Ameri
can visitor's pride and emotion.
Before the Americans came to Ar
menia SO per cent of these children
were affected with trachoma, con
junctivitis and other eye diseases. All
were suffering acutely from the af
fects of inanition and exposure. The
death-rate was about 50 a day. Young
physicians from the United States
army and American nurses took the
children in hand and brought them
back to health and happiness. Today
the death,-rate is about one every
three months.
When the correspondent visited
Aleiamlropol this vast multitude of
children assembled oa a great cam-,
pus and formed in gigantic human let
ters, the words "America, We Thank
You," as an expression of their grat
itude for the heln thpv i";-4 f-,
the adults and children of the United
states, viewed from the great stone
military barracks which surround the
campus, the scene was inspiring and
touching. The Bolshevik authorities'
refuse to allow the children to have"
American flags so. the orphans carried
instead great white towels bearing
the stamp "Medical Denartment
j United States Army." These they
waved enthusiastically, crying, "Long
Live the United States; Long Live the
American People."
Orphans Do Work
The entire work of cooking, sew
ing, washing and bedmakinc at the
orphanages is done by the orphans'
themselves. The American personnel
numbers less than 3, a remarkable,
fact when it is considered that there)
is a whole city of children to lookl
after. j
Armenia is yet too poor to su$iports
these children, although some steps'
are, being taken to this end. so that
! the Americans wiii continue to care '
for them till means are found of piac-1
j ing them with "families or finding em-
ployment for them in. the country,
I From the age of five the orphans are
! taught sewing, embroidering, basket-
making, woodworking, desnmaking and
(other useful arts. The older children
fare instructed in the mechanical arts,
in farming, dairying and cattle-raising.

Scrub' Brush Takes -On
New Role; Used j
As Flesh Reducer
VIENNA, No. 21. The serab
brush has beea introdaced in Vienaa
in a new roie, that of Clesh reducer'.
The idea was brought here by a
South American doctor and basHuude
a considerable rub in overweight cir
cles. The scrubbing treatment with a
perfectly dry brush, a trifle softer
than the kitchen variety, must be
taken four or five times s day. The
more the better. Every part of the
body must be massaged and as much
pressure as possible applied to make
the work of the bristles effective.
After the rubbing, a void or tepid
shower or plunge should he takes. If
these directions aTe carried out, th
sntlmsiasts say, a pound or so of ''ex
cess, disappears like magic every
week.

Never in Lane County has a race of any
kind been so extremely close or so hotly con
tested. This fact has undoubtedly served to
arouse the wonderful interest that is being
taken throughout this section in the final dash
for the wire. It is doubtful if there exists a
single home in the community that is not vit
ally interested in the success of one of the
favorites in the battle, and watching every
gain with anxiety and eagerness, hoping and
trusting that their choice may come under
the wire first and be acclaimed the champion
of champions, the proud winner of the big
