CHINA WORKS TO PREVENT Fill PEKING, Oct. 29. CP) A re port recently issued by the engineer ing department of the China Interna tional Famine Belief commission, or ganixed four years ago as a result of the great famine in central China, gives the following interesting data i to preventive work done in con ' junction -with the American Bed Cross: . . Two thousand miles of new road were built and 750 miles of roads re paired. The total cost of this work was over $4,000,000, Chinese curren cy, or about $2,000,000 gold. In regions subject to drouth, ap proximately 25 miles of irrigation districts were constructed, at a cost of $51,000 and over' 870 miles of drainage ditches were dug or cleaned at an expense of $220,000. lHve hun. dred miles of river dykes were built or repaired, entailing an outlay of more than $500,000. Wells wore sunk to the number of.6,072, at a coBt of $405,000. ' . Mitchell, recently appointed as deputy district attorney of Lane county, has returned and resumed his duties at the local office. Judge O. II. Foster who was appointed as dep uty district attorney will continue to have charge of the prosecution of all criminal cases until the return of Dis trict Attorney Clyde N. Johnston who is recovering from injuries sustained in an automobile accident. Mr. Mitchell will have charge of all work of the office with the exception of the court prosecution, About five more criminal caseB are yet to be beard of the number of indictments returned recently by the grand jury. Some Schools Are To Enjoy Vacation Election day will mean a holiday for many school pupils of the county, according to E. J. Moore, county su perintendent of schools, who states that where the polling place ia at a school house the classes will be dis missed. In many of the precincts In the rural districts of the county the voting is held at the schools and in some cases unusued rooms may be taken over for the polling place and in thin case the school classes ara not interfered with. At the Heilig Is Elliot Dexter in "The Spitfire." . "The Spitfire" drew favorable com ment from all corners at Its showing Tuesday, and Is proving to be one of the real theatre attractions if the week. Admirers of Elliot Dexter are afforded an opportunity to see him at his best in the motion pictures. "Buggies of Bed Gap" ia a scream. It runs true to the atory in the book by the same name, and is one of the best comedies of the week. "Feet of Clay" is guiuing in popu larity with each showing. It certainly is a distinctly different play, and is decidedly pleasant to tuke. Johanna Jumes, singing "You Are the Idol of My Dreams," ia one of the added fine attractions at the Ilex. One More District Has Road Election One more road district lias tiled ap plication for the holding of a special election Saturday, November 15, for the p,irpose of voting on a proposed epcdal levy for road work. District 22 will vote on a five mill tax for gen eral, maintenance work in that dis trict. The polling place will be at the Mercer school bouse.
