IseI'KI HOWARD BROWWEli MAKES STATEMENT EUGENE, Oct. 23. (To The Guard) t litre read, ot course with regret, but not with surprise, tot. Mercer's letter regarding me in re cent issue of The Guard. I knew and knew too, months ago, when I be came a candidate for the office of dis trict attorney, that the matter mH- tioned was bound to come up. The colonel occupies considerable space,, partly in exhibiting his own oure motives and partly in exposing my wrong doing. The long and short of tha matter Is that ten years ago, in an excess of youthful xeal and in a case involving most scandalous e- taiis. I overstenoed the line of duty and committed an offense tor which the law fixes the maximum fine ot one' hundred dollars. I, as attorney for the defendant, felt at the time that the revoltine character of She charges male and the lock of effective evidence to establish them, justified my action. I know that I was wrong in this belief. . When my act was broushc before fhft court. I confessed- what I had done and satisfied the fine which the court assessed. Mr act awl not pre vent the trial of the obnoxious ease, It was tried and all the disgusting de tails made public and the result wbs, aa should have been anticipated, a re fusal of the jury to convict. As i have said. I do not deny my wrong doing. My answer is that I have satis fied the penalty, first by the payment of the fine which the court imposed snd secondly by ten years of suhse ouent honest, upright and helpful life in this community. May there be no recovery from a fault? In attacEing ma on this charge, long since outlaw ed, is the colonel quite living up to the tenet oi tnat i;aristiansty m. which he talks so glibly? In closing let me say that I am not depending for election on the support of those who never erred, bat I do most earnestly crave the support ot those who, notwithstanding some slips still strive on, hoping by greater el fort and care, to establish themselves in nubltc confidence, and to truly serve the community in which they live. To my friends, and ail who may mmnnrt me. I sav. that if elected to the office of district auorney ot win county, they shall have no reason to regret voting for me. Respectfully ynnrs, . HOWARD M.
