The original was written by Thomaa Hardy, the man, who, it is said, knew best the heart of the English people, big and little, royal and pheasant. Into the picture Blanche Sweet and Conrad Nagel have put the utmost of their art, and the result is their mas terpiece, a picture" praised by all critics. Neilan has transferred this tale to the screen as the author wrote it. lie has retained all the power, all the appesl, all the beauty of the ori ginal The young director, who has so many film successes to his' credit, has invested the dramatic progress of the story with a pictorial beauty that adds to its interest, and the de velopment of the plot is done in scenes that gratify the eye as well as grip the mind. Another advantage "Teas of the D'UrberriUes" has, it is that the ex terior scenes were photographed in authentic locations, iieilan made the rural episodes in the Hardy-Weescx country in England, which enforces the drama hy having the absolutely correct atmosphere. The only change from the original Neilan made has been to advance the time to the present day, which makes the story far moro interesting for present day consumption. The di rector considers"Tess of the D'Urber villes" to be a story fitting nil time oml consequently foels this is not tak ing a liberty. As she is portrayed by Blanche Sweet, the girl is invested with rare beauty andvcbarm of personality that immediately wins unending sympa thy.
