t ( ! 't4 Page Eight THE EUGENE GUARD Friday Evening, October 24, 1024 E- E When Eugcue und Corvullis high schools clash tomorrow afternoon Bt Bell field in Corvnllis one of the teams will probably be eliminated as contenders of the valley conference cnaniuionehip. Albany high also loems as a pos sible champiun team. The Albany llillsboro game ut Albany last Katur duy upset the dope pot ell over the lot, when the Washington county boys got the long end of a l'-i to 0 score. Albany under coach of "Stan" Sum mers has a better outlook than it has had for years. He has 13 letter men to work with, and four guards and (four tuckles that will average 1(15 pounds or better. Their defeat Sat urday was due to the breaks going to llillsboro. Corvallis Husky. Corvallis high will send in a line weighing about 105 pounds againnt Kugene tomorrow, with a 150 or 155 pound backficld. Sixteen men are sure to play at one time or other in the game. The players are all in good con dition and the battle will have an Im portant bearing on the Willamette valley conference. Cline "Tub" Smith, fullback who is doing the punting this year for Cor vallis is showing up as their bright and shining light. His fierce tackling in the initial game with the O. A. C ltooks was a feature of that contest. Leader Has Ability. "Mart" Smith, captitin end quarter, is running the team in a splendid way and is deadly on kicks from place ment. "Ham" Itawlings at halfback is another outstanding player of the maroon and red. lie is an open field runner and twister, that is always good for gains in an open field or around ends. On the line, 1'armenter, left tackle, and Ilukill, center, are the other outstanding players of the college city team. Outlook Gloomy. For Eugene the outlook 1b gloomyq indeed. "We are going in to fight 'em to & finish, but the team is badly crippled," says "Spike" Leslie. As a result of a sprained ankle received in the Hosebttrg game lust Saturday Fols, Eugene crack halfback, is on crutcheB. Howard, the speedy little quarterback, will also play the bench on account of a fractured rib received in the Hoseburg game. Folts's berth at half will doubtless ly be filled by Schrncder, and Syl vester, a freshman, will take the pivot post, with Colemnn barkiug signalB In Howard's place. Coleman is the half back who made such a splendid show ing in the Hoseburg (rnino. Lino Is Shifted. Schraeder's tackle position will be filled by Callinon, and other shifts will be made in the team before it goes up against Corvnllis tomorrow morning. Conference Warming. The high school 'conference 1b warming up. All the cams this year are stronger than' they have been for years, and tho pennant contest this yesr should be worth seeing. Mol lis. Huntington and his Hed nnd Black Knlcni high gang took tho Willamette Frosh down the lino 7 to 0 Satur day. Despite the appnrent strength of Huntington's lads the race will probably be between Eugene, Corvnl lis and Albany. A special train will leave the Southern Pacific station Saturday morning at 11 o'clock. The Missionaries are primed for the game nnd from advance reports Coach liorleake will start a team made up almost entirely of lettermen. Coach Maddck of Oregon will start his entire first team except Carl Johnson and Ward Johnson. Carl Johnson bruised his kidceys in the Stanford game and will hi out for several weeks. Ward Johnson injured a nerve in his leg several weeks ago and that member has been slow in rounding into shape. Hate Card Practice Mnddock sent the team through seveVal scrimmr.ge practices this week. Yesterday's practice was for three hours and tas concluded only when daifincss made it impossible toJ Nee t,he ball. The varsity used the babes for doornivs and jcored many long gains. The freshmen, however, also exhibit ed a powerful attack and pounded the varsity line for two touchdowns. Maddock will try few trick ply against Whitman as he expects little trouble from the Missionaries. Mont of the plays will be off tuckle buckB, with an occasional end run. The Lineup. Knt Wilson will start at center with Ilailey and Shields at guard; Kerns and Reed at tackle; Mautz and Itliss at cud; Anderson at quarter; Vitus and Tcrjcsin at half; nnd Jones at full, liliss has done so well at end in practice' that Mnddock has about decided to let him Btnrt there and moved Captai - Iteed back to tackle, his regular position. While Oregon will he facing Whit man. Washington will be entertain ing the Oregon Aggies at Settle. .. m:iou is expected to win by at lenat three touchdowns, ns the Ag gies have exhib'ted little offensive strength in the last two games. California will play its first confer ence game. It will face Washington State ut Berkeley. The northerners have been going badly in the last two games, losing to (ionznga end Idaho, while California has been improving ail the time. California is the favor ite. Idaho vs. Stanford In the most important conference clashes Idaho will play Stanford at Portland. The game iB expected to be a battle royal as a defeat will prac tically eliminate the loser from con ference honors. Stanford is a six to 12-polut favorite because of its pow erful line and weight advantage. Should Nevers return to the lineup, it will boost Stanford chances con siderably. Montana and University of South ern California have easy game. Montana plays the Montana School of Mines at Butte, while Southern California faces Nevada at Ixis Ange les. Nevada held Californ a last year to a Bcoreless tie, but the team isn't this year, nor wbb it last year, as strong ns the Bcore indicated.
