Gov. Pierce Opens
Defense Day Drive
SALEM, Ore., Aug. 14. Organisa
tion for national defense day, Septem
ber 12, was set in motion Wednesday
by Governor Pierce when he address
ed letters to mayors in the state ask
ing their cooperation in making that
day a success. The governor asked
each mayor to name a local commit
tee to arrange for some sort of pa
trlotle meeting on defense day. In
places where units of the national
guard are located be suggested that
the exerdaes be held in conjunction
with the mobilisation test called for
by the secretary of war.
