John Sainpolis in "The Hero,"
a Preferred picture.
"Of the numerous sincere efforts at
really great picture productions that Jiave
been made during the season, none has
come nearer to hitting the bull's eye
than does (lasnier's production of "The
Hero," shown here for the first times
today at the Hex, where it will remain
for another day.
Wiien Gilbert Emery's brilliant atory
was the talk ot New York some critic
asked, with an obvious sneer, "What
would become of snch a production if done
on the screen?
The answer, perhaps, may be found in
the review of "The lEero" as a screen
production, ns cited in the M'iircU issue
of PJuHoploy magazine, which has placed
this picture at the top of its list of the
six best pictures of the month.
"The Hero" was a very well done
bit of play wri tint? as a footUght effort.
Here was the first drama daring to inti
mate that all heroes did not wear khaki.
Indeed, the young cJiap from the wars
in 'The Hero" is a ne'er-do-well who
drifted into Hervice and a half dozen
medals. The real hero is a little hum
drum clerk wiiose life Is n routine of
alarm clicks, celluloid collars, snatched
coffee, cidd lunches and tired journeys
home at the end of tJie day.
The film Version, by Jj. J. Gnnnier, Is
successful in catching this. Moreover,
"The Hero" has an able cast.
