Tentative specifications for four elec
tric starting motors were agreed upon by
the standardization committee of Uie
Automotive Electric association at its
rigulnr meeting In New York recently.
This organisation is composed of manu
facturers of starting, lighting, and
ignition equipment. The stamlarization of
starting1 motors constitutes the second
step in the broad standardization pro
gram of this ausociation, and is the initial
step In standardisation of a set of elec
tric generators, according to Automotive
Iudustrles. .
Chairman Joseph Bljur of the stan
dardization committee wishes It to be
expressely understood that these four
starting motor specifications are tenta
tive, as wore tho electric generator speci
fications recently developed.
The four starting motors art) Intended
to serve tho entire passenger ;rnr fit-Id
and truck engines of corresponding pis
ton displacement. The suggested specifi
cations are as brief us can be made and
are intended to enable the buyer readily
to select equipment by performance.
Tlicse specifications are given along
two lines: First, the stnlled torque, and
second, the borne power nt a speed of
4(H) r. p. in., which is supposed to give
the mi mi mum speed at which satisfac
tory starting can be obtained in cold
wo at Ji or .It is thought that if the starting
motor meets those two TcquirciucntH it
will fulfil nit other demands that can be
.made upon It.
It should not fie concluded that No. 1
starting motor of necessity goes with
No. 1 generator, which comprises an
electric inntnllntion on a gasolino engine,
as the starting motors nre selected ac
cording to tho torque requirements of
tho gasolino engine. The so are governed
largely hy piston displacement, wherciis
the electric generators nre selected by
the r. n. m. at which they deliver the
required electric output.

Figures for last year show that Cal
ifornia leads the entire country with
S0Ii,710 passenger car registered. This
". a gain- of 140.440 or 21 per ceut over
1021. This raises tiie number of pas
senger cars in use in the Golden State
per 1,000 of population, on basis of the
1120 census figures, to 2.14.
The total number of motor cars and
trucks registered in the United States
in 1022 totaled 12,K57,H70, a gain of
l,KH,wi over llKii, au increase of 17.4
per cent. 1
In making these statecents and pre
senting these figures, .lohu C. Wet more,
a veteran eastern automobile editor of
a uuarter of a century's exnerienco in
writing about motor cars, wiio has come
from New lork to reside in sun-set land
and has established a Pacific coast motor
nws bureau, says:
"En route to my present home I de
voted several weeks to a hasty sur
vey of the conditiou of tho sport and
industry on the Pacific coast through
cells on automobile editors and distribu
tors in Halt Lake city, Seattle, Portland,
San Francisco and Ixis Angeles.
"VJhat most impressed mo was the
marvelous resources of this region and
the certainty of steady and wonderfully
rnpd growth in population each year.
Each state I visited seemed to iiave
in itself wealth far outstriplng its pres
ent population. Utah's miues and ranch
es: Washington's shipping, apples and
great 'Inland empire'; and Oregon's lum
ber, fruits and farm lands were a rev
elation to me. I could see that Califor
nia did not depend on tourists since
from its own soil it produces untold
wraith In fruit, oils and ' minerals, to
say nothing of its being a great gate
way for trans-Pacific commerce.
"In a word, I fully realized Jiow great
an attraction was its climate and scenery
to tourists and how boundless were lis
resources and business opportunities to
permnucnt settlors.
"I could understand tne reason for
the big investments 1 saw in spacious
and niagnlficient motor cor merchandis
ing establishments and why automobile
manufacturers so generally have their
ees on the big, growing and nll-tiio-ycar
auto buying in this land of sunshine.

Chances look bright for Sachamcnto
being added to California's racing corcuit
this spring. The scheme, which lias been
under way for over a year, is assured of
realization by the announcement that 250
acres of lard on the California Traction

had been secured for the speedway and
that it was expected that work would be

to hnve the track in condition for the
