Dr. Hoffman's report presented tables,
based on statistics from '.'." cities, to show
that the suicide rate per 100,000 bad in
creased to 15.7 in 1021, as compared with
12.4 in 1020. It whs a fraction higher
than the average 12.2 for the five-year

five-year periods, which showed rules of
17.6, l'J.5 and 20.4, respectively.
San Diego, Cal., set the high record
for 1U21, with a suicide rate of 3S.7, Sun
Francisco coming second with 37.3, Spo
kane, Wash., third with 32.5, and Lob
Angeles fourth with 27.!. Dr. Hoffman
hazarded the guess that this wua because
of the number of health and fortune seek
ers who migrate yearly to the west coast,
many of whom fail to find what they arc
seeking, . .

. Death, Methods Differ.
The analysis showed that men suicides
preferred the shooting and hanging
routes, while the greatest percentage of
women suicides elected poison and asphy
xiation. Almost, three times as many men
as women ended their own lives, 40.8 per
cent of them electing fire arms and 17.S
per cent choosing the rope. Only 14.7 per
cent of the female suicides shot them
selves and 13.4 per cent chose hanging.

the same states had a homicide-suicide
