tigating nil angles of lust night's disaster
at the Beauon Hill coal nihie, near Itlack
river, in which Oscar Stiles, -10. of IMi
wamish, -was killed; K. M. Yanslyck, mine
superintendent, was probably futatly hurt
and Tom KorftiH, Renton, badly bruised.
Korfns, a miner, wan the only member
of the trio able to extricate himself from
the cove in that followed a terrific blast
of gas damp.
Vanslyck and Stiles were crushed and
burned and partially buried beneath the
sagging walls and timbers. Korfns, in
describing the tragedy, told of setting off
a dynamite' charge A)Q feet inside the
mine. Tbe three men were making their
way back to the scene when an open
lamp on one of their hats set off (lie giu
damp.
A terrific muffled report rolled through
the mine shaft and streaks of flame
swept the walls and. timbers, soaring tin
bodies of the men. The walls fell u,
partially burying all -of them. Korfus,
who had been burned twice previously in
mine explosions, revived sufficiently to
dip; himself out and signal to th inijic
opening. A group of miner rescuers soon
