sion reached the highest point ever
known when every word spoken at
the ceremonies over the bier of
America's unknown Boldier at
Arlington National Cemetery,
Washington, was heard distinctly
in San Francisco, 3,000 miles tway.(
Just how tiie feat was accomplished
is now told:
Not only were thousands nnd
thousand;, of miles of copper wire,
manned by hundreds of operators,
necessary to carry the voice of
President Harding and others over
the valleys and mountains to the
western coast, but in the basement
of the Arlington Memorial Amphi
theatre was a veritable electrical
plant costing thousands of dollars,
at which keen-eared experts sat and
gauged every vibration as it sped
'instantaneously to the thousands of
(auditors on the Pacific Coast and in
New York City. This achievement,
which was never obtained before, is
the result of what is known as tne
Bell lAiud Speaker.
Possibilities of Voice Transmission.
While the transmission of the
President's voice to waiting thou
sands in New York and Sun Fran
cisco was a patriotic contribution
on the part of the American Tele
phone & Telegraph Company, it
marked what is expected to be the
most notable development in voice
transmission of the century. It
opens the possibility of reaching
practically the entire United States
in one dav with the spoken word.
Colonel John J. Carty, head of the
Bell system department of develop
ment and research, who brought
the mechanism which transmitted
the President's voice to its present
hicrh state of nerfection. is the man
who was in charge of the lines of
telephonic communication for tlie
American Expeditionary Forces in
France. He is a wizard ol the
wires.
When' Colonel Carty was asked
what he considered the most im
portant feature of the Bill loud
speaker development, he said, "The
change that it is bound to create in
the art of oratory. Heretofore
orators have been chosen largely
for their loud voices, their capacity
to reach the ears of those at the
back of the hall. We will make it
possible for any ordinary man with
common sense, possessing the aver
age speaking voice, to get his
thoughts into the minds of as many
auditors as he may want to reach.
