Russian Rifles Arrive
Two hundred rifles which would aave
been used by Russians but for the Bol
shevik! peace, have arrived nt the Uni-
veraity and will aervo aa a part of the
equipment of the Cniverelty of Oregon
Studenta" Army Training Corps, which
will be organised upon the opening of
school In October. Tbe shipment alao
included 5,000 rounda of ammunition.
The L'nireraity now haa between 400 and
300 guna and other ahipment have been
promised.
Militiaman to Hike-
Major Babb, of the Eugene militia
battalion, baa ordered that th members
take a hike one week from Saturday
to tbe Mi Kensie river, and camp at a
point north of the county poor farm.
They will remain in camp that night
and return Sunday evening. Each mem.
ber ia to take two blanketa, plate, knife
and fork and cup. Tbe food will be
furnished by tbe battalion. By neit

Fear Have Narrow Escape
Mr. and Mra. Frank Curtis and
daughter, Florence, aad Misa Gladys
Calkioa, oi Alma, eacaped injury in al
moat miraculous manner last Friday
when a tree fell acroaa their wagon
while they were driving home from Eu
gene. The trunk of the tree, which waa
between 16 and IS ini'hea in diameter,
struck acroaa tbe seats. Gladys Cal

hurt. One of her thumba waa smashed
and ber foot waa injured.
Farmer Held for Profanity
Hana Miller, a teuant on a farm owned
by Mra. H. H. Wrinkle, waa arrested
Tueaday afternoon on a charge of using
profane language on a public highway.
Miller waa arrested upon the complaint
of Mra. Wrinkle, who alleged that the
accused abuaed her when ahe aaked him
about her aha re of the crop, amounting
to one-tbird. Tbe farm ia located on the
Elmira road about five milea from Eu
gene. Miller waa taken Into custody by
